Three Pillars of Health Promotion

Health promotion aims to enable people to improve their health and see health as more than an absence of disease. It involves more than just healthcare and focuses on creating overall wellbeing. The key factors for good health are peace, shelter, education, food, income, environment, resources, and social justice. There are three pillars of health promotion: good governance through accessible healthcare policies, healthy cities by creating greener urban spaces, and health literacy by increasing health knowledge and skills to empower healthy choices.

Health Promotion

Health promotion is the process of enabling people to increase control over and improve their
health. Health is seen as a resource for everyday life, not the objective of living. Health promotion
is not just the responsibility of the health sector, but goes beyond healthy lifestyles to wellbeing.
The fundamental conditions and resources needed for good health are:
 Peace
 Shelter
 Education
 Food
 Income
 A stable ecosystem
 Sustainable resources
 Social justice and equity.

3 Pillars of Health Promotion

1. Good Governance
Strengthening good governance and policies to make healthy choices accessible and
affordable to all, and to create sustainable systems that make whole-of-society
collaboration real.
Problem:
The WHO refers to the Filipino Healthcare System as “fragmented.” There is a history of unfair
and unequal access to health services that significantly affects the poor. The government spends
little money on the program which causes high out of pocket spending and further widens the gap
between rich and poor.
Solution:

Universal Health Care, this act will automatically enroll Filipino citizens into the National Health
Insurance Program and expand PhilHealth coverage to include free medical consultations and laboratory
tests.

2. Healthy Cities
Creating greener cities that enable people to live, work, and play in harmony and good
health.
Problem:
Cutting trees in some urban and rural areas to build infrastructure.
Solution:
In an effort to preserve the environment, the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH-
7) partnered with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR-7) in replacing
every tree that will be affected by the government’s ongoing "Build, Build, Build" projects.

3. Health Literacy
Increasing knowledge and social skills to help people to make the healthiest choices and
decisions for their families and themselves.
Problem:
Low literacy level alarming, making Filipinos ‘more sick’ said by doctors. The low level of health
literacy among Filipinos, notably among the underprivileged, is one of the key drivers causing the
ranks of unhealthy and sick Filipinos to swell at an alarming rate, medical and health industry
leaders have warned.
Solution:
We should educate Filipinos about health literacy at an early age. Even as early as their elementary
school education, if possible. We can also do community service in some areas that needs health
care assistance and to teach them as well regarding health literacy.
