Lourdes Jansuy Cruz National Scientist

Lourdes J. Cruz is a Filipino biochemist who has studied the venom of the fish-hunting Conus marine snail. She characterized over 50 biologically active peptides from the snail's venom, contributing to understanding their biochemistry and toxicity. Her work also involved isolating and studying conotoxins from the venom to examine human brain activity and potential medical applications for neurological diseases.

LOURDES JANSUY CRUZ

NATIONAL SCIENTIST

Lourdes J. Cruz is a Filipino

biochemist whose research
has contributed to the
understanding of the
biochemistry of toxic peptides
from the venom of fish-hunting
Conus marine snails. The
characterization of over 50
biologically active peptides
from the snail's venom had
been made possible, in part,
by her studies.

She is a Pinay Biochemist Who Studied A Deadly Snail. Dr. Cruz is known for her
scientific contributions to the field of biochemistry, particularly on the isolation and
characterization of the venom called conotoxins from marine cone snails. She has also
contributed to the development of conotoxins as tools for examining the activity of the
human brain.
The study of the nervous system is of high importance in the field of medicine and
surrounding sciences. Such research has led to many practical treatments for
neurological diseases. Interestingly, such medical breakthroughs may come from the
strangest of places. Sometimes, even venomous marine snails.
