The Scientific Method:

Discriminate the correct word according to the context.
1. Scientists/Scientific/Science use the scientific method to help them learn about the
world. The scientific method is a way to ask questions, get information, and understand
the information.
What Are the Steps in the Scientific Method?
Scientists use a group of rules to student/studied study the world around them. These
rules are steps. The scientist must follow the steps in a certain order. The rules are
known as the scientific method. The scientific method 2.helper/helps/helpful scientists
find out new things. It helps them think of good ideas. It also helps other scientists
understand their 3.work/worker/working.
First, scientists think of a question and then they find information about the question.
Then, they make a hypothesis, or a guess, about the answer to the question. Next,
they 4.planner/plan/planning and carry out an experiment. An experiment is a test that
helps scientists think more about their hypothesis. Finally,
they 5.writer/writing/write down a conclusion. A conclusion tells what happened in the
experiment. It also tells why it happened that way.
Steps in the Scientific Method
Step 1: Ask a Question (Observations and Curiosity)
Step 2: Get Information (Observations and Curiosity)
Step 3: Make a Hypothesis (Hypothesis and/or Question)
Step 4: Plan an Experiment (Experiment and Testing)
Step 5: Observe the Experiment (Observations, Data Collection and Data Analysis)
Step 6: Make Conclusions (Conclusions)

The First Step

Scientists begin their work by thinking of a question. People ask questions when they
want to know something. Asking a question is the first step in the scientific method.
The question can be simple or more difficult. Scientists might ask how much a bean
plant grows each day. Or they might ask why snakes stick out their tongues.
Benjamin Franklin, a famous American 6.inventor/invent/inventing, decided to study
lightning. To learn about lightning, he began by asking a simple question. The question
was: “What is lightning?”

Facts
The next step of the scientific method is to get information. Scientists learn everything
they can about the thing they are7.student/studying/study. Scientists get this
information in different ways. They might read books. Often, they talk to other
scientists. Benjamin Franklin did both to learn more about lightning.
Making a Guess
Next, scientists think about their question again. They do not know how to answer the
question yet. But they can guess what the answer might be. This guess is called
a hypothesis. Making a hypothesis is the third step in the scientific method.
Benjamin Franklin made a guess about lightning. He guessed that lightning was a kind
of electricity. That was his hypothesis. He knew that his guess
made 8.sense/sensitive/sensible.
Testing
The fourth step of the scientific method is to plan an experiment, or a test. An
experiment helps the scientist check his or her hypothesis. Scientists write down what
they plan to do to test the hypothesis. They usually need to use tools and other
materials. For example, Benjamin Franklin planned to use a kite to 9.doer/do/doing an
experiment with lightning.
Next, scientists do the experiment. This is the fifth step of the scientific method. During
this step, scientists must10.observer/observe/observing very closely. When scientists
observe, they watch and listen 11.careful/care/carefully. They may also take
measurements. These are a scientist’s observations.

Franklin did an experiment to find out about lightning. In his experiment, he put a metal
key at the end of a kite string. Then he flew the kite during a 12.stormy/storm/storms.
Before long, the key began to give off sparks. When the storm was over, Franklin wrote
down all of his observations.

The Last Step

In the last step of the scientific method, scientists make a conclusion. They explain
what they think happened in the experiment. They also try to explain why it happened
that way. The conclusion is always 13.basis/basic/based on the scientist’s observations
from the experiment.
Benjamin Franklin came to a conclusion about his experiment. He saw that the key gave
off sparks. He knew that metal gives off sparks when electricity touches it. He
concluded that electricity probably touched the key.
Franklin thought that the 14.electricity/electric/electrician had probably come down
from the storm clouds and gone into the key. There was no other electricity nearby.
Franklin’s conclusion was that lightning is a 15.kind/kindness/kindly of electricity. His
hypothesis seemed to be right.
The scientific method is an important part of doing science. Scientists all over the world
use the scientific method.
