Course Overview and Goals:


Fundamentals of Music is offered at RHS as an elective class. The focus of the Fundamentals of
Music class at RHS is a non-performing exploratory class. This means that we will be experiencing music
in many different forms and with many different approaches. This class serves essentially as a music
appreciation class, in which we will experience and study music from a beginner's perspective. No
previous experience in music is expected, but an interest in music is necessary. This class focuses on
music from a broad perspective, examining the roots and foundations of music through literacy, history,
evaluation, and experience.

In this class:
1. We will work consistently to advance our understanding of music through evaluation,
reflection, and hands-on experience.
2. We will work to establish a foundation of music literacy and musicianship.
3. We will develop an understanding and respect for all musical styles through learning,
listening, and reflecting.
4. We will work together as a class to experience music-making.
5. We will make historical and personal connections through a focused study of music
history.
6. We will rejoice in music.

Evaluation (Grading):
Grades will be assigned based on the following:

30% PAR (Participation, Attitude, Responsibility)


 Easy points. Do what you're supposed to do; don't do what you're not
supposed to do.
30% Classwork (based on completion and effort)
 Classwork will consist of daily exercises, readings, group playing
sessions.
30% Tests/Quizzes
 Periodic (announced) tests and quizzes, including playing demos
10% Presentations and Final Exam
 Composer presentations at the end of semester
Late Work Policy:
It is the student's responsibility to be proactive in making up missed assignments and classwork.
In case of school absence, late work will be accepted one day late for each day absent. No work will be
accepted after this time.
For this class, you will need:
 iPads
 Paper (looseleaf or spiral notebook)
 A pencil (every day)

Introduction to the Study of Music

Unit 1: Music Literacy


 Reading and understanding music notation

Unit 2: Intro to Singing/Choir


 Vocal production and solo/ensemble singing—Application of music
literacy

Unit 3: Music Composition with GarageBand


 Writing your own music using music technology

Unit 4: Music History


 The history of music from prehistory to today

Unit 5: Musical Theatre


 Viewing and evaluating dramatic musical productions

Final (Comprehensive and Non-Punitive)
