MANAGEMENT AND LEADERSHIP: PLANNING YOUR
PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT
Know your learning style
[MUSIC PLAYING]
SPEAKER 1: So my preferred learning style is usually a combination of text, so
written. Writing, but I also like the verbal learning, so where you have a discussion or
you have something explained to you, either in person or in a video or audio, I mean
you get to listen to it back and go through a few times and then maybe have a
discussion or an analysis about it afterwards.
SPEAKER 2: My preferred learning style, I have two, in actual fact, visual and also
doing because I like to watch people and then I try myself through trial and error,
basically, so then you can, if you mess up, you can work out how you messed up
and then fix it.
SPEAKER 3: My preferred learning style I think is probably a mixture of things. I do
like to see things written down, I know that much. And I don't take things in through
the ear very well because I recently tried to learn to ride and all the instructions were
given to me by talking to me. I was riding around on the horse and all I kept thinking
was I need to have this all written down. I need to see it written down. So I don't
need to see things written down, but I also quite like to do things and that always
consolidates things. So I'd say reading and doing would be my first two preferred.
Hearing instructions, I can probably only do if I get in conjunction with something
else.
SPEAKER 4: So the way I like to learn is very practical, hands on, knowing the
background to why I'm doing something, what I'm going to get out of it, how would
the people interact, is kind of what keeps me motivated to do it, but also teaches me
what I'm doing, how it has an effect on the people.
SPEAKER 5: In general, I like gathering as much material as I can, and I love
textbooks. Oh, I love something that has had some kind of editorial input and it takes
me on a journey from the easier stuff, to the middle, to the more advanced in a kind
of logical way. I like going through and being quite thorough. And then, I like to try
and experiment with what I've learned and see if I can apply to see if I retained
anything at all. If I remember it, if I understood it, or are applying as well.
SPEAKER 6: My preferred learning style is about reading because it just seems to
be the most efficient. You can get a lot of information very quickly and take it in and
absorb it at your own pace. So It puts you in control.
SPEAKER 7: Well, my preferred learning style is to be hands on in my field of work,
things like learning how to film or recording audio. Well, give me that theory, that's all
very well, but actually I like to get my hands on a camera, play with it, practise, you
know make sure I know how to turn it on and off, how to record, how to change the
iris or the focus and things like that. So the type of learner that I am is very hands on
and practical. That's my preferred learning style.
SPEAKER 8: My preferred learning style is through action, engaging with a subject
rather than just reading, watching, or listening. I feel that that way it goes in and I
retain information better.
