Coconut Leaf Broom Making
Machine for Village Households
Vimal Jyothi Engineering College, Coordinator
Kannur, Kerala Mr. Thomas John
1
Objective of Technology
• The main objective of the coconut leaf broom making machine is to automize
the production of coconut leaf brooms.
• This Machine helps in reducing labor, time and cost of production.
• The broom making machine separates the mid rib and the leaves in an efficient
and faster manner compared to a normal person carrying out the process by hand
held tools.
• In this machine, coconut leaves are fed at the inlet and a finished broom is
produced at the outlet of the machine.
• The Machine is capable of making one broom in a minute when sufficient leaves
are fed to it.

WORK PLAN
• Since the main purpose of this project is human empowerment in villages, we
will approach the “Kudumbasree” (Kudumbashree is the women empowerment
and poverty eradication program, framed and enforced by the State Poverty
Eradication Mission (SPEM) of the Government of Kerala), we will demonstrate
our machine to them and encourage them to form clusters and buy the machines
to start entrepreneurial broom business which could add a great profit to their
cluster.
• We will also approach many other unemployed village artisans, and encourage
them to start clusters by using this simple technology of broom making with the
help of this machine.

Benefits to Villages
• When we are producing this machine in bulk we can sell one Broom making
machine for an approximate Rs 40,000 to 50,000.
• This machine can make one broom in one minute time period, if the machine
works for about 8 hours continuously per day, each day it can produce
approximately 500 brooms.
• In India the coconut stick brooms are sold for 75Rs per piece. If the clusters
using our machines sell each Broom for 50Rs, they can earn 25,000Rs by selling
the 500 brooms they have produced.
• If the broom production cost including the electricity bill, transport, raw material
cost etc. is about 5,000Rs then they will have profit of 20,000Rs per day.

Benefits to Villages
• Thus we can say the payback period of the Broom making machine is within one
week.
• This machine can provide employment to many unemployed village households
who can start clusters of their own.
• Advantage of having a cluster is that, the cluster can quote tender for supply of
broom to bulk buyers (Industries).

Benefits to Institute/College
• Students will have a direct exposure the technologies while doing
this project
• It will give an opportunity to our college to serve the society and can
be a part of promoting technologies to the villages
• It will generate a sense of social commitment in students
