ART SONG ANALYSIS PROJECT

The purpose of this project is to begin to analyze art songs.

Print these instructions and the attached score. You will need to use a high-resolution printer for
these projects, try using the one in the Computer Lab in Frasier. Once you have done the
assignment, STAPLE this page to the score and turn them in together. You will be docked 1
point for not stapling or otherwise permanently attaching the pages together. Go to Wal-
Mart, Big Lots, or anywhere else that sells cheap office supplies and purchase an
inexpensive stapler!

I. Questions:

1. Determine the form of the piece based on its poetic setting. You will need to determine
where each verse of poetry begins based on text repetition. I am not providing a
translation because I want you to look at the German, find the repetition in the poetry,
and determine the verse structure from that. You will also be able to use punctuation to
assist you in figuring out where the verses begin and end. (I will accept a couple of
answers here.)

How many verses are there? (2 points) ______________

2. Once you have determined where the verses begin and end, decide which of the
following forms are being used based on the musical (especially melodic) ideas. You
may have accompanimental “stuff” to talk about as well. These are the possible forms:
Strophic, Modified strophic, Through composed (be careful with this one, it will more
frequently be modified strophic), ABA, AB, or some sort of sectional form such as
ABABA, ABACA, etc. Remember for ABA,AB, and sectional structures, the B section
(or C section or D section, etc.) must be significantly different – new melody, new
harmony, etc – and the A section, if it repeats, must be nearly identical to the original A
section. (I will accept a couple of possible forms here.)

What is the form of this piece? (2 points) _______________

What key is this piece in? (2 points) __________________

II. Analysis:

1 Mark the sections that indicate the form in the score using a highlighter or colored pencil.
(2 points)

2. This piece is titled “Der Ring” from Frauenliebe und Leben by Robert Schumann. The
song is about a marriage proposal and the giving of a ring in betrothal. It is sung from the
woman’s point of view prior to the actual proposal. Knowing that, what musical
gestures do you see that set the mood for this piece? List three for full credit. If you
provide four, you will receive ½ point extra credit. Provide five or more VALID musical
gestures that support the text or mood, I will give you a point for extra credit. Remember,
I am looking for musical gestures, not performance interpretations. (2 points)
