Stuffed Secret

This one-person play follows Allan, an adult man who returns home from work feeling bored and frustrated. He takes a teddy bear out from under his bed that was given to him by his mother as a child. Allan vents to the teddy bear about his dissatisfaction with his job and life, and expresses missing his mother's guidance. He hugs the teddy bear tightly, taking comfort in the reminder of his mother's words that she is there for him when he feels lonely.

1.
An adult man’s bedroom with a bed
as the center piece.

ALLAN enters the room with a

business suit and briefcase. He
removes his jacket, loosens his tie,
and takes off his shoes. Allan puts
the briefcase under his bed and takes
a small box from under his bed. He
removes a teddy bear from the box.

ALLAN
There you are.

He sits on the bed

ALLAN
You won’t believe the day I had. Crunching numbers can be, well, boring. When I thought about
what my life would be like, I didn’t expect this.

Allan removes his tie

ALLAN
Didn’t expect to become so bored with work. The things that would make me happy doesn’t any
more. I wanted everything to be easy. I guess it doesn’t work that way, huh?

Allen stares at the bear for a beat

ALLAN
My co-workers are an interesting bunch. They appreciate me when it benefits them. I can’t
describe it. Minding my own business then, wham! Extra work falls out of the sky.

He lays out on the bed in frustration

ALLAN
The things I want can’t necessarily be bought. However, the stuff that can be aren’t what I really
want. I used to have guidance. (beat) I miss, Mom. She could always give me good advice
whenever I needed it. A shame that I didn’t listen to her or answer her calls. Mistakes on my
part. Now, I’m here suffering talking to a toy.
2.

He sits up. The bear is on the ground

ALLAN
The toy doesn’t listen to me either.

Allan sighs and picks up the bear

ALLAN
If it’s any consolation I don’t listen to myself much either. But Mom gave me you so I don’t feel
so alone. Had you since I could remember. When I first got you Mom said, “hold ‘em close
when you feel lonely and know that I am there, too.” I guess I understand now. Whelp.
Tomorrow is tomorrow my friend. I have no choice but to try again tomorrow.

Allan hold the bear in a tight hug. He

lays down and takes a few deep
breaths.
