1) This physics homework assignment asks students to consider adding cubic and quartic interaction terms to a Lagrangian density, which introduces new interaction vertices. Students are asked to draw all diagrams that contribute to the 3-point function up to first order in the new coupling constants g and λ, and provide the symmetry factors. 2) Students are then asked to draw all diagrams that contribute to the 3-point function to third order in g but zeroth order in the quartic coupling λ, without including any φ4 interaction terms.

Physics 615 Fall, 2013

Homework #6. Due Oct. 18 at 3:00

1) Consider adding a cubic interaction to the lagrangian density of Eq. 4.1,

so
1 1 g λ
L = (∂µ φ)2 − m2 φ2 − φ3 − φ4 .
2 2 3! 4!
Thus the interaction hamiltonian becomes
!
g 3 λ
Z
3
Hint = dx φ (x) + φ4 (x)
3! 4!

which means there will now be two kinds of vertices,

Z Z
z − iλ dz 4
and z − ig d4 z.

All the diagrams we had without the φ3 term will still enter any n-point
correlation function (for even n) but there will be additional diagrams.
Draw all the diagrams that enter the 3-point function

hΩ| T φ(x)φ(y)φ(z) |Ωi

that enter with at most one power of g and at most one power of λ, and
give the symmetry factor for each, with an explanation of how you found the
symmetry factor.
It may be useful to also draw, and count, the diagrams which do not enter
the 3-point function, but if you do, be sure to label that they do not enter.

2) Now do the same for the contributions of order g 3 λ0 , without any φ4

interaction.
