HEALTH EDUCATION REFLECTION
“developing a clinical eye”
Upon knowing about the subject during enrollment, I really did expect a lot from this subject,
and few months passed the experience did not let me down. I really do learn a lot from this subject,
more in that it was divided into 3 classes: Lecture, Skills Lecture, and Return Demo. Even though, our
tuition fee did increase twice more compared from the first sem. I really think that it is worth it due
to the expertise of the instructors and the systematic outlaying of lessons, in which from just less
than two months, I learned a lot of knowledge and skills for the development of my clinical eye.
First, the Health Assessment Lecture for prelims introduced me to many important terms and
concepts about health assessment. I learned a lot about the importance of health assessment, the
nurse’s role in health assessment, collection and analyzing data, and the many other ethico-legal
cases that as a student nurse are vital knowledges to learn. This lecture class is very effective for me
as I can widen my understanding as to what and how to assess a client. Like making it clearer to me
the difference between subjective and objective data, the different techniques that I can use (like the
laundry list), and even it gives guides as to the proper way of approaching clients. The best aspect I
like from these, is the fact that all are evidence-based.
Second, the Skills Lecture class is something I really had to adjust due to its three hours long
lecture time which is just new to me. As for the class experience, the learnings run smoothly with our
competent instructor which makes me so glad. In this class, we learn a lot about the normal and
abnormal features to look out during health assessment, and more importantly as to how to do a
specific system-based health assessment. A very productive learning.
Finally, the Return Demo Class is something new and honestly always making me nervous as
I see its major importance and is a very important evaluation as to how I can turn the cognitive
knowledges that I learned into a practical skill. Also, the presence of this class is amazing for me as it
gives emphasis to the word “practice” in the nursing practice which reflects the application. The
existence of this class together with the application of disciplinary actions just like in the hospital is a
real deal in preparing us nursing students to the hospital.
In light of these, the Health Assessment is very critical in training future nurses and provides
us with necessary knowledge and skills necessary in doing the very critical Assessment.
