Sublevels and Electrons in Energy Level 4

Atomic levels are specific energy levels that electrons occupy in orbitals. They are numbered 1, 2, 3, and 4, with level 1 being closest to the nucleus. Each atomic level contains sublevels that further define the electron configuration. The sublevels are S, P, D, and F orbitals. The S orbital can hold 2 electrons, the P orbital 6 electrons, the D orbital 10 electrons, and the F orbital 14 electrons. Atomic orbitals represent spaces that electrons are likely to occupy within these sublevels, with each orbital holding no more than 2 electrons. The maximum number of electrons a given principal energy level (n) can hold is 2 for n=1, 8 for n=2, 18 for

1.) What are atomic levels?

- Atomic levels are specific energy that electrons can have when occupying specific orbitals. They are numbered
1, 2, 3 and 4. The 1st level is the orbit closest to the nucleus.
2.) What are sublevels? How many electrons can each sublevel accommodate?
- Atomic levels can also be broken down to sublevels, these are S orbital, P orbital, D orbital and F orbital. It is an
energy leveldefined by quantum theory.
- Each sublevel has its own amount of electron

Sublevel No. of Electrons

S 2
P 6
D 10
F 14
3.) What are atomic orbitas? Enumerate the different atomic orbitals and draw/print their shapes.
- Atomic orbitals are spaces that have high probability of containing electron. The sublevels contain these orbitals.
- Each orbital should only contain 2 electrons.
4.) What is the maximum number of electrons that following energy levels can accommodate:
n= 1, n= 2, n=3, n= 4 and n= 5? Why is it so?
- n= 1 only contains s sublevel so the total possible electrons occupied is 2.
- n= 2 contains s and p. That would take 2 + 6 = 8 electrons.
- n= 3 contains s, p and d. That would be 2 + 6 + 10 = 18 electrons.
- n= 4 contains all sublevel that will have a total of 32 electrons.
