A320 Lake Fuel

This document provides instructions for checking for fuel leakage from the right wing of an aircraft. It describes performing applicable leak tests to find the source of the leak and analyzing the leakage rate and type based on how far the fuel indication spreads. It specifies different corrective actions based on whether the leakage is light, heavy, or continuous. Repairs may be temporary or permanent depending on the leakage type and schedule.

3 . Job Set-up
Subtask 28-11-00-210-062
A. General
The causes of fuel leaks are:
R - damage of the structure
R - damaged or loose fasteners
R - incorrect installation of components
R - damaged seals, O-rings or sealant.
4 . Procedure
Subtask 28-11-00-790-080
A. Leakage Routing Analysis
(1) To find the fuel leak, do the applicable leak test as
follows:
R - (Ref. TASK 28-11-00-790-001)
R - (Ref. TASK 28-11-00-790-002)
R - (Ref. TASK 28-11-00-790-003)
R - (Ref. TASK 28-11-00-790-004)
R - (Ref. TASK 28-11-00-790-005)
R - (Ref. TASK 28-11-00-790-006)
R - (Ref. TASK 28-11-00-790-007).
(2) The fuel leak can show a fuel leakage some distance
from the source.
You must monitor all the possible leakage flow directions,
between the external and the internal leak points.
(3) When fuel comes through a seal, an O-ring or the
sealant the adjacent faying surface becomes a wet area.
The wet area extends in all directions, until stopped at a
prepacked seal or a faying surface seal. The fuel comes
through at the point of least resistance.
Subtask 28-11-00-790-081
B. Leakage Rate Analysis
(1) There are three types of fuel leakage. These are related
to flight safety and are identified as follows:
(a) Light leakage:
1 Dry the area of the leak.
2 After 10 minutes there is a fuel leak indication that does
not go more than 100mm (3.94in.) in any direction.
(b) Heavy leakage:
1 Dry the area of the leak.
2 After 10 minutes there is a fuel leak indication that is
between 100mm (3.94in.) and 180mm (7.09in.) in any
direction.
(c) Continuous leakage:
1 Dry the area of the leak.
2 After 10 minutes there is a fuel leak indication that is
more than 180mm (7.09in.) in any direction.
Subtask 28-11-00-790-082
C. Leakage Type and Location
(1) The correct procedure for the leakage type and
location is given in the Table that follows:
LOCATION OF LIGHT HEAVY CONTINUOUS
LEAK LEAKAGE LEAKAGE LEAKAGE
1. Open areas, where leakage A B C cannot flow to a
possible fire source:
R - top and bottom wing surfaces.
2. Not fully closed areas: A B C
R - rear walls of tank.
3. Closed areas: B C C
R - front walls of tank
R - dry bay
R - engine pylon location
R - bottom center wing-surfaces

KEY
TYPE OF REPAIR
A) LIGHT LEAKAGE
B ) HEAVY LEAKAGE
C) CONTINUOS LEAKAGE
A No repair is necessary. Do a weekly inspection to make
sure that there is no change of the leak rate.(You can do a
repair if an applicable maintenance period is available).
B No immediate repair is necessary. Do a daily inspection
to make sure that there is no change of the leak rate. Do a
permanent repair at the next scheduled MAM or MCM
check that occurs first.
C Do a temporary repair immediately (before the next
flight) ([Link] 51-76-12-300-003).Do a permanent
repair during the 500 flight hours that follow, or at the
next scheduled MCM check if this occurs first (Ref. Task
51-76-12-300-001) or (Ref. Task 51-76-12-300-002).
NOTE : For more etailed fuel tank repair data, refer to the
SIL(Ref. SIL 57-086).
