R.E.F. TIME
Reflection, Evaluation, Freedom
The life of Socrates became an example to us.
Socrates was one of the great philosophers of all
time and we do not know how many words of
wisdom he thought. One of the popular quotations
he thought is “One thing only I know, and that is I
know nothing.” He claimed that he knows nothing
because he believes that if you know nothing you are
able and willing to know something new that you
haven’t know yet. Knowing nothing proves that you
are ready to gain wisdom. Just like an example,
when you pour some water in an empty bottle, you
will see that the water will occupy the space of the
bottle. The empty bottle symbolizes a person who
knows nothing and the water symbolizes wisdom.
That simple illustration depicts his quotation. Another, Socrates didn’t stop to seek for the truth
and to find what is right. His personality and humility made the people to believe in him. Not
knowing, it is also the reason why other people hate him and became his enemies just because
he wants to find the truth. And until the day he was sentenced to death due to false accusation
he still humble himself.
I admired him because he is very wise and if only I could turn back time I want to be his
follower. I learned a lot in his life, how he handle situation even if it is hard. Gaining wisdom is
different from gaining knowledge but they are related to each other. Having wisdom is having
the ability to discern and to judge what is right while having knowledge is having the ability to
know something that is supported with facts. And just like Socrates he wants to find the truth
through wisdom, I also want to find the truth through applying the greater scheme of
knowledge which is the wisdom.
As Socrates said, “Wonder is the beginning of wisdom.” In life we should not stop
wondering because this will help us to know what truth is. Finding the truth is a very difficult
thing to achieve but a very exciting to do because when you seek the truth you will consider the
opinions and perspective of others. Accepting the opinions of others is giving them the respect
they need. When you are open to others’ opinion, it will be easier for you to meet your goal
and to realize that you have to know more, to gain wisdom and to absorb knowledge.
“It is not living that matters, but living rightly.”
-Socrates
