Legal Writing
• Any legal document must be concise, clear and engaging
• Two types of legal writing:
• The first type requires a balanced analysis of a legal
problem or issue
• The second type of legal writing is persuasive
In the context of legal writing, a good writing means
writing that promotes the readers’ ability to make the
important decisions legal readers need to make in the
course of their professional duties.

• it is only when writing is clear that the reader
can accurately comprehend the writer‘s message
and use that infor mation to facilitate
professional decision-making
• clarity requires proper (i.e., conventional)
grammar and punctuation
• Use ordinary words
• Use simple sentence structures

• Concise writing is efficient writing
• Concise writing means conveying the
appropriate level of details
• Concise writing is writing that is as succinct
as possible without unduly restricting the
amount of information conveyed

• No matter how sound your reasoning, if it is presented in a dull and
turgid setting, your hearers—or your readers—will turn aside. They
will not stop to listen. They will flick over the pages. But if it is
presented in a lively and attractive setting, they will sit up and take
notice. They will listen as if spellbound. They will read you with
engrossment
• readers will not want to keep reading a
document, no matter how clear and concise
it is, if it does not engage their interest
