BACKGROUND:

VICTIM:
The date and place of birth of Shahzeb Khan, son of Aurangzeb and Ambreen Khan was 31
January 1992 in Karachi. Aurangzeb Khan was a DSP in Karachi. Shahzeb Khan had two
sisters. At the time of this incident Shahzeb was taking his higher education from a private
university in Karachi.

CULPRIT:
Shahrukh Jatoi, son of feudal Sikander Jatoi was born on November 27, 1993. The other
culprit Siraj Talpur belonged to Talpur Clan.

THE ACTUAL INCIDENT:


Shahzeb was murdered due to the fight which took place between Shahzeb and the servant of
the culprit who had threatened and harassed the sister of the victim, that is, Maha Khan Sister
of Shahzeb Khan. On 24 December after the walima ceremony of Shahzeb’s other sister,
Mahaa was returning home when Shahrukh Jatoi spotted her with his friends and started
teasing her. Shahzeb was in the same car with Mahaa and other family members and noticed
that Shahrukh was drunk. He started following Shahzeb’s car and stopped at Khayaban-e-
Bahria. As soon as the family stepped out of the car, Ghulam Murtaza Lashari started teasing
Mahaa Khan this ignited the fight between Shahzeb and Shahrukh. Shahzeb was murdered
due to the fight which took place between him and the servant of the culprit who had
threatened and harassed the sister of the victim, that is, Maha Khan Sister of Shahzeb Khan.

OTHER DETAILS:
● there were two spectators, Muhammad Shah and Muhammad Ahmed Zubairi who had
witnessed the fight and declared in the court accordingly.

● the two suspicion people said that Shahzeb had inaugurated the fight which ultimately
resulted in his murder.

● On the other hand, the two other friends who were accused reported in court that Shahzeb,
when had been shot rolled over on the other side of the road and relaxed. Nawab Sajjad Ali
and Ghulam Murtaza went to the victim and found he is alive, they then asked Shahrukh to
kill him on the spot.

● Shahzeb was found dead when he was taken to the hospital.

JUDGEMENT:

At first nobody was arrested, but with the passage of time media started demanding justice
for the victim. On 7 January 2013, Siraj Talpur, Sajjad Taplur and Ghulam Murtaza Lashari
got arrested, while in the meantime Shahrukh Jatoi fled and was not in Pakistan. However, he
was arrested later on when found in Dubai. On June 2013 Shahrukh Jatoi and Siraj Talpur
were given death penalties. As soon as the punish was announced, the Jatoi brothers engaged
into an argument with the judge of the court and they were then pushed out of the premises.
As a result they could not sign the judgment and for further proceedings they were called
again to sign the judgment. Shahrukh Jatoi’s family said that they will file an appeal against

the court’s judgment. Also the Jatoi family tried to declare his son under 18 but when tests
were carried out it was reported false.

RELEASED ON BAIL:
On 23 December 2017, Shahrukh Jatoi and other suspects were bailed on late Saturday, after
the Sindh courts approval for the bail. Shahrukh’s bank accounts, weapons and properties
were frozen by the Sindh high court and an extra 3 years of imprisonment was added to his
punishment due to the ownership of illegal weapon. After the decision, the Jatoi family
started to threaten Khan Family and scared the Khan family by saying that they will kill their
daughters. They forced the Khan family to sign the forgiveness deal. DSP Aurangzeb Khan
with no other option left forgave the culprits in the name of Allah with no cash. But on 13
January Sindh high court rejected the bail of the culprit rejected the bail appeal and arrested
the culprits again. Their punishment was then changed from death sentence to life
imprisonment which in reality meant only 7 years. This change in punishment was caused
due to the loopholes present and eventually the attention of media had also shifted.

Why did this happen from sociological perspective?

This incident happened because the government is failing to provide protection and hold
perpetrators accountable. The Pakistan government failed to meet legal obligation to protect
the country from harassment and [Link] report gives us the recommendations and
encourages the government to develop strategies incorporating the principles of the troubled
families.

What social context did it occur in?

From this incident family members are grieving the loss of a son, brother, nephew and cousin
when Sharukh Jatoi shot Shahzeb Khan he lost his [Link] incident not just affects Sharukh
Jatoi but his all family members and his friends are affected, as this case was legally recorded
in court. People are living in fear from criminal and the police are failing to protect them.

Use sociological vocabulary and explain your ideas?

There are a lot of ways to stop these kinds of incidence which cause so much trouble in our
society and people will play the role to stop such events that is going to happen in bad way.
As a student we can also adopt some of the points to help our society from such events. Some
of the points which help our society to stop these incidences are as follows:

 Patience:
Patience plays an important role in our society where intolerance grows rapidly than
the tolerance. People should educate themselves enough to grow inner patience which
is the simple way to protect ourselves to get into any trouble created by in tolerated
individual.

 Media:
In today's world, media became an important as our daily needs. Today’s media is
playing an outstanding role in creating and shaping of public opinion and
strengthening of society. Media is the sword arm of democracy. Media acts as
watchdog to protect public interest against illegal activities and create public
awareness. Now a days media is spreading negativity in our society which is totally is
useless that is the reason behind intolerance among us therefore media has to play
vital role to create positivity and they should create such programs to acknowledge
people about such incident and courage those people who are connected to deceased
victims.

 Protest:
If there is any situation occurs with anyone which is your related or someone that you
know so it is a part of sympathy to courage him and his family and we should gather
and speak and raise voice against such a crime as their family deserves your support

 Changes in judicial system:


Our law is so weak in giving justice to the innocent people which are so important and
beloved for our nation.
As we have witnessed such type of cases in our life we have also seen our judicial
system failing in giving justice to the victims and the cases remains open for very
long period of time. In such type of situation media and people (especially students)
can play important role.

 Non-governmental organization:
As Ngos played important role in Shahzaibs murdered case by forcing our
government to reopen the case so people can take help of these types of organization
if they don’t get justice from the government.

Which sociological theory best explains this event?

Conflict theory best explains this event, because it’s showing two different classes upper
class and middle class .This event shows how the higher class use their power to hide their
mistakes.
