Tutorial – 6 (Three-phase circuits)

Q.1. Each phase of a star connected load consists of a non-reactive resistance 100 ohm in parallel with a
capacitance of 31.8 µF. Calculate the line current, power absorbed, the total kVA and the power factor
when connected to a 416V, 50Hz, 3-phase supply.

Answers: line current = 3.39A, power absorbed = 1.728kW, the total kVA = 2.433kVA and the power
factor = 0.707 leading

Q.2. Compute the power delivered to the load by the three phase generator in the circuit shown in
following figure

Answers: 43.2kW

Q.3. Calculate the line currents in the three wire Y-Y system of following figure:

Answers: Ia = 6.81 <-21.80 A, Ib = 6.81 < -141.80 A, Ic = 6.81<-261.80 A

Q.4. Three identical impedances of ohms are connected in delta to a 3-phase, 3-wire, 208 volt abc
system by conductors which have impedances of 0.8+j0.63 ohms. Find the magnitude of the line voltage
at the load end.

Answers: 109.3 < 2.030

Q.5. A star connected load having R = 42.6 ohms/ph and XL = 32 ohms/ph is connected across 400 V, 3
phase supply, calculate Line current, reactive power and power loss.

Answer: Line current = 4.336A , reactive power = 1803 VAR and power loss = 2404 watts
