Summary of Unit:
For this 5-Day Learning Map students will be learning three basic takedowns and one defensive technique, the sprawl. Covering
these four basic takedowns (Double Leg, Single Leg, and High-C) as well as a sprawl will give students the key basics to
understand wrestling. Students will also learn basic rules and scoring in the sport of wrestling. Students should be able to follow
the flow of a high-level wrestling match.

What overall attitudes or sensitivities should students build towards these topics?

There are a few attitudes or sensitivities that students will build during the wrestling unit. First, wrestling often gets a bad rap. This
lesson will dispel many of the misconceptions that students have about the sport of wrestling. Students will also learn and develop
an appreciation for how hard the sport of wrestling is. Wrestling is a very difficult sport and is a great source of physical activity.
Wrestling oftentimes gets a label of a “grunt” sport with not much thinking. However, after learning takedowns and sprawl defense
students will learn all about the little strategies and mind games that happen behind the curtains in wrestling. Finally students will
learn beneficial wrestling skills can be useful in self-defense. Self-defense is an important skill to learn, wrestling is one of the best
that allows you to control the encounter.

What should students know before this unit?

There are two key concepts that students should know before the start of the wrestling unit. First, students should be made well
aware before the wrestling unit that there will be a lot of physical contact between students during the unit. Students will have to
practice the moves with one another during drilling. Students should think about and make sure they are comfortable with this. If
students are uncomfortable, accommodations can be made. Second, students need to show that they can handle their emotions.

With wrestling being a physical sport, there will be contact between students. With contact often accidents happen and people get
bumped, poked, etc. Students need to understand that this stuff happens and not lose their cool.
