HOW WE USE MICROSOFT WORD FOR EDUCATIONAL PURPOSE
INTRODUCTION
Word processing is the composition, editing, and formatting of text. Word
processing programs, such as Microsoft Word, in addition to working with text
also provide tools to insert pictures, edit photos, draw objects, and produce
graphic organizers. The range of options available within word processing
programs make them versatile to the user.
Microsoft Word (simply referred to as Word) is a sophisticated word
processing application program/package specially designed for performing
various word processing tasks, such as typing, editing and printing out of textual
information. It allows adequate control over the creation and presentation of the
typographic work. MicrosoftWord also offers facilities for basic graphic design,
statistical report of a document, spelling and grammar checking tasks, etc. These
and numerous other features and facilities make it notable among other word
processing programs, as well as other mechanical devices for word processing
(e.g. typewriter).
On September 29, 1983, the first version of Microsoft Word came on the
market. Its original name was "Multi-Tool Word." Several other versions followed,
including Word 95, 97, 2000, XP, 2003 and 2007, 2010 and the latest is part of
Office 365.
Why We Use Microsoft Word
Perhaps no other computer software has as great impact on education as
Microsoft word. Not only does Microsoft word offer high versatility and flexibility,
it also is "model-free" instructional software; that is, it reflects no particular
instructional approach. A teacher can use it to support any kind of directed
instruction or constructivist activity. Since its value as an aid to teaching and
learning is universally acknowledged, Microsoft word has become the most
commonly used software in education. It offers many general relative advantages
(unique benefits over and above other methods) to teachers and students:
USES OF MICROSOFT WORD FOR EDUCATIONAL PURPOSE
Microsoft Word is a valuable part of the technology now available for
educators in schools. Students and teachers both receive many benefits when
doing class work on the computer. Many of the headaches of paperwork are
eliminated.
Spelling -- Word processors contain an electronic spell checker. The
student writer has immediate feedback about misspelled words. Student
must discern which of the computer-generated spellings is correct for the
context. Teachers no longer have to red-ink spelling errors. They can focus
on the few exceptions the spellchecker does not catch.
Security -- Teachers and students gain a sense of security about losing
assignments. When the student saves her work, she avoids the possibility
of the assignment being lost or misplaced. If an assignment is ever
misplaced, a replacement can be easily printed.
Publishing -- Work done on a word processor can easily published on a
bulletin board. Teachers can create electronic anthologies of their
students' writings. Each student can receive an electronic copy of published
works with no printing costs.
Mobility -- Work done on a word processor and saved on the Internet is
highly portable and accessible from any computer with Internet access.
Dogs do not eat papers in cyberspace. "I forgot it at home" is irrelevant.
Just log onto the nearest computer and your work appears on the screen.
Availability -- One of the advantages of using Microsoft Word is that it is
available practically everywhere. Word comes standard on many PCs. You
can typically find it on your work computer, computers at school and your
home PC. This makes it easy to save documents on a flash drive, take them
with you and work on them somewhere else. If you need to do some work,
you can usually find a computer with Word on it.
USES OF MICROSOFT WORD FOR LEARNING
Saves time — Microsoft Word helps teachers use preparation time more
efficiently by letting them modify materials instead of creating new ones.
Writers can also make corrections to Microsoft word documents more quickly
than they could on a typewriter or by hand.
Enhances document appearance — Materials created with Microsoft word look
more polished and professional than handwritten or typed materials do. It is
not surprising that students seem to like the improved appearance that
Microsoft word gives to their work (Harris, 1985). This is especially possible
with the many templates that are part of the Microsoft word.
Allows sharing of documents — Microsoft Word allows materials to be shared
easily among writers. Teachers can exchange lesson plans, worksheets, or
other materials on disk and modify them to fit their needs. Students can also
share ideas and products among themselves.
Allows collaboration of documents — especially since the release of Google
Docs, teachers and students can now create, edit, and share documents
synchronously.
Office work made easy — Microsoft Word is an effective tool for creating all
kinds of documents for any official nature like letters, memos, reports, term
papers, and typesetting novels and magazines, etc.
Quality of documents— Microsoft Word offers you specialized tools for
formatting your document in various ways; perform spelling and grammar
check to produce standard and error-free documents; in-built thesaurus for
finding appropriate synonyms to replace repetitive words/phrases; word
count feature for a statistical report of your document; drawing and graphics
editing tools to add a touch of graphics or images to go with your documents;
numerous wizards and tools for creating and distributing merged faxes, form
letters, labels and envelopes, etc.
Availability — One of the advantages of using Microsoft Word is that it is
available practically everywhere. Word comes standard on many PCs. You can
typically find it on your work computer, computers at school and your home
PC. This makes it easy to save documents on a flash drive, take them with you
and work on them somewhere else. If you need to do some work, you can
usually find a computer with Word on it.
With Integration Office Programs— Another benefit of using Microsoft Word
is that it easily integrates with other Microsoft Office programs. For example,
if you have a spreadsheet that you created on Microsoft Excel, you can easily
paste it into a Word document. You can work with programs such as
PowerPoint as well. This makes it possible to complete a wide array of
computing tasks without having to spend time converting documents or files
so that they are usable on other programs.
Instant Help—While you are creating a document, Word also helps you make
sure that it is the best it can be. When you misspell a word, Microsoft Word
will immediately underline it. You can then click on the word and get
suggested spellings. If you type a sentence that has poor grammar, Word will
underline the sentence for you. This allows you to change the document while
you are still working on it.
Navigation Pane — Microsoft Word offers an easy-to-use navigation pane at
the top. This allows you to see visual representations of many of the functions
that you might need. You can simply hold your mouse cursor over an icon to
see exactly what it does. Then you can click on the buttons to initiate certain
functions and tasks. Instead of having to scroll through multiple menus to
find something, you can usually find what you need on the pane.
Document Flexibility — Word lets you create simple word-processing
documents like letters and reports and make them as basic or as jazzed-up
as you wish -- you can add color, use clip art, write in a variety of fonts and
sizes, and use tables, borders and bullet formatting. Word also offers
templates to help you create
USES OF MICROSOFT WORD FOR TEACHING PURPOSE:
Many schools have begun to teach typing and Microsoft word to their students,
starting as early as elementary schools. Typically these skills are developed
throughout secondary schools in preparation for the business world.
Undergraduate students typically spend many hours writing essays. Graduate and
doctoral students continue this trend as well as creating workers for research and
publication. These manuscripts are often in access of 200 pages and are typically
are defining points of a student’s careers.
It is very likely that your students will be required to use word to complete school
assignments. In addition, many of them will need word skills later in life when
they enter the workplace. For these reasons, it is important to include word skills
when planning classroom activities.
When selecting a task you want students to perform using a Microsoft word it is
essential to determine the technology skills that are required. In addition, you
must consider the students’ grade level and previous computer experience prior
to selecting a task. Microsoft Word can be grouped into basic and advanced levels
of difficulty. Incorporating word skills in the classroom can create meaningful
learning experiences for students.
MORE USES:
1. Lesson Planning
Through Microsoft word teachers can plan their lessons to teach the
students. These lesson plan can be weekly, monthly or semester wise or
annually depending upon the curriculum used in that class.
2. Reflective Diary
By using Microsoft word, teachers can make a reflective diary of the
classroom daily proceedings. It can cover students’ performance either
curricular or extra-curricular, attendance compilations, quizzes dates and
other work.
3. Certificates
Microsoft word is helpful in making all kind of certificates.
4. Tests
One of the most important task Microsoft word can do for you is to write
test and print it out. In the same way, Microsoft word can also be used to
compile results in collaboration with Microsoft Excel.
5. Students Worksheets
By assigning different work to students will be handy but by the help of
Microsoft word you can keep a record of worksheet of each student’s
profile.
6. Diagrams and Charts
All kind of diagrams and charts including different tools to form custom
data for your own like can be made by Microsoft word.
7. Articles for the Newspaper
Any activity in the class or school can be shared to public by newspapers
and these articles can be written by using Microsoft word.
8. Directions for Activities
9. Envelopes
10. Reports
11. Newsletters
