ANALYSIS
1. How did you find the activity?
2. What have you noticed about the behavior of the graphs of the rational functions?
3. How about the asymptotes?
ABSTRACTION
Then, What can we conclude?
We need to follow certain steps in sketching the graph of rational functions and as follows:
1. Find the equation of the vertical asymptote by letting the denominator equal to zero.
2. Sketch the vertical asymptote. Dash lines may be used to draw asymptotes.
3. Find the horizontal asymptote, if there is any, by equating the numerator to zero. Always consider the
three cases in finding the horizontal asymptotes.
4. Find the x – intercept and the y – intercept.
Make a table of values to determine the behavior of the graph near the vertical asymptotes and horizontal
asymptotes, as well as the intercepts. Plot some additional points. Complete the sketch by connecting points
with a smooth continuous curve over each interval in the domain of rational functions.

2.5 Domain and Range of a Rational Function
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
ACTIVITY
I. Find the value of x that will make the denominator equal to zero or which make the functions
undefined.
1. f(x) = 1/x
2. f(x) = 1/(4 – x2)
3. f(x) = x/(x2 – 2)
4. f(x) = (x + 2)/(x – 1)
5. f(x) = (x2 + x – 3)/(x2 + x - 12)
II. Complete the table using the f(x) = 1/x, and discuss the behavior of f near any excluded x-values.
X -1 - 0.5 - 0.1 - 0.01 - 0.001 →0
f(x) -1 -2 - 10 - 100 - 1000 →-∞
X 0← 0.001 0.01 0.1 0.5 1
f(x) ∞← 1000 100 10 2 1
Note that as x approaches 0 from the left, f(x) decreases without bound. In contrast, as x approaches 0 from
the right, f(x) increases without bound.
ANALYSIS

2. What did you do in order to find the value of x that will make the denominator equal to zero? Did you
find it easy to do?
3. What other methods you use in order to find the values of x that will make the equation zero?
4. What are your observation upon filling up the table?
5. Does the value of f(x) increases or decreases when the value of x decreases or increases?
