Course Outcomes: Through this course students should be able to
 describe basic concepts of forestry and Indian Forest Policies.
 practice the regeneration and propagation of forest species.
 use instruments for measurement of various growth parameters of forest species.
 apply concept of agri-silviculture for ensuring food security.
SYLLABUS
THEORY
Unit I
Introduction: definitions and basic terms related to forestry, objectives of silviculture,
stakeholders of forest, forest classification and salient features of Indian Forest Policies.
Unit II
Forest regeneration: natural regeneration - natural regeneration from seed and vegetative parts,
coppicing, pollarding, root suckers, artificial regeneration – objectives and techniques, choice
between natural and artificial regeneration.
Unit III
Forest operation: crown development and classification, tending operations-weeding, cleaning
and thinning-mechanical, ordinary, crown and advance thinning.
Unit IV
Forest mensuration: objectives, diameter and height measurement, instruments used in
measurement, tree stem form, form factor, form quotient, measurement of volume of felled and
standing trees and age determination of trees.
Unit V
Agroforestry and social forestry: definitions, importance, criteria of selection of trees, different
agroforestry systems prevalent in the country- shifting cultivation, taungya, alley cropping, wind
breaks and shelter belts, home gardens.
Unit VI
Cultivation of forest trees: cultivation practices of two important fast-growing treespecies of
the region
