Context Clues in Academic Texts

LESSON PLAN IN ENGLISH FOR ACADEMIC AND PROFESSIONAL PURPOSES

CONTENT STANDARD
 Acquires knowledge of appropriate reading strategies for a better understanding of academic
texts.
PERFORMANCE STANDARD
 Produces a detailed abstract of information gathered from the various academic texts read
LEARNING COMPETENCIES
 Determines the structure of a specific academic text (CS_EN11/12A-EAPP-Ia)

I. Objectives
At the end of the lesson, the learners should be able to:
1. Define context clues
2. Identify the different types of context clues
3. Participate actively in class discussion
II. Subject Matter
Topic: The different types of context clues
Reference: English for Academic and Professional Purposes
Materials: Textbook, Laptop, Projector
III. Procedures
A. ACTIVITY
Guess the meaning of the following underlined words. Write your answer on the blanks.
1. Carbohydrates such as pasta, bread, and rice may contribute to weight gain.

B. ANALYSIS
Let them check their answers by referring to the dictionary. If they were able to guess all
the words accurately, then you already have the skills of looking for context clues to find the
meaning of unfamiliar words.

C. ABSTRACTION
Call some students to define context clues based on the previous activity given and let
them enumerate the different types of context clues. Introduce to the class the topics are the
different types of context clues and how authors use them when writing academic texts.

D. APPLICATION
Ask them to divide themselves into four and choose a leader to represent their group.
Give their assigned topics and they are only given 30 minutes to discuss it by group.
IV. Evaluation
Here are some examples of sentences with example clues, synonyms clues, antonym clues
and general clues. Read each sentences carefully and focus on the underlined word in each
sentences. Based on the hints from the sentences, write the meaning of the underlined words.
(Refer on pages 10-12)

V. Assignment/Agreement
Construct sentences using synonyms clues and antonyms clues.
