De-tuning Reactors for Capacitor Banks

De-tuning reactors are used in capacitor banks to prevent harmonic resonance from damaging electrical equipment. Harmonic resonance occurs when harmonic frequencies amplified in a system resonate with capacitor banks and components. This can fail capacitor banks and cause problems in power distribution systems. Detuning reactors eliminate harmonic amplification, reduce stress on capacitors from harmonics, and improve power factor in environments with high harmonic levels. They enhance the life of capacitors and reduce overheating of transformers and other equipment from harmonic amplification.

De-tuning Reactors

The primary purpose of de-tuning reactors in a capacitor

bank, is to prevent a phenomenon in the electrical system known
as harmonic resonance. Resonance can have a devastating effect
on electrical equipment, and is the main reason why older
capacitor banks without de-tuning reactors fail and cause
problems in the facility’s power distribution system.
