Philosophy of Classroom Management
To ensure that I am giving all my students a good and fair education, I must not only have
expectations for my students, but for myself. Both teachers and students have specific roles in
the classroom that come with these expectations.
My role as a teacher is to facilitate students’ learning. Because teachers are a crucial part in a
student’s life, an expectation I have for myself is to be a role model for my students. As a
teacher, I feel that I must be a leader of the community because teachers are often in the public’s
eye. I expect myself to respect all students. When I respect my students, I am also respecting
their cultures, interests, and perspectives. This is critical in the classroom because respecting one
another can change the classroom environment.
I believe that a students role in the classroom is to be an active learner. I feel that students
should oversee their own learning and take responsibility for their learning. I expect my students
to come to class prepared and ready to learn. I want students to be respectful of their peers and
their opinions. I believe that this is a critical aspect of today’s society and can be learned in the
classroom. I expect my students to be punctual to class and when turning in assignments because
this is an important skill to learn before entering college or the workforce.
Rules, Procedures, and Routines in My Classroom
The goals that I have for my classroom is to become a community of learners, that students
feel comfortable to ask for help, and students can respect their peer’s perspectives. These goals
will help create a safe learning environment for my students, which will then ensure every
student is receiving a good and fair education. In order to achieve these goals, I must provide
classroom rules for my students. My classroom rules include the “Four P’s”:
1. Prompt: Be on time
This rule is critical for my students to follow because this will help prepare students for the
workforce in the future. I also believe that this is needed because when students come into class
late, they can become a distraction to the other students.
2. Prepared: Bring all materials that you will need for class
It is imperative for students to have all the necessary materials for class. If students do not
have their books, notebooks, or pencils, this can lead to a distraction because they will have to
leave the classroom to get these items. Teaching students to be prepared will also get students
3. Productive: Stay on task
I have included this rule because it is important for students to know that they are expected to
be productive and stay on task in my class. This rule helps to lay out the expectation for my
students.
4. Polite: Respect your peers, teacher, and yourself
It is important to establish a safe learning environment for your students. If students are not
being polite and respectful, then a safe learning environment cannot be established.
An important part of these classroom rules is to introduce and explain them to my students. I
plan on doing this by introducing these rules on the first day of class so that the students are
aware of my expectations from the beginning. I will go through each rule slowly and be sure to
ask the students if they have questions or need further clarification. I will provide examples of
each of these rules, so students understand what these rules mean.
In addition to introducing the classroom rules to my students, I must go over the procedures in
my class. The procedures in my class are as follows:
1. When the last bell rings, students are to find their seats and put away all electronics. There will
be a bell ringer posted on the board that students will be expected to start when the bell rings.
2. If a student needs to use the restroom, they must raise their hand and ask. The student must
then sign out and take the hall pass with them.
3. Students will be required to raise their hand for any questions, comments, or concerns. This is
will prevent students from calling out and possibly talking over other students.
4. I will require that students will not pack their belongings until I dismiss them. There may be
times when I need to remind them about homework or tests and if they are leaving the class as I
do this, they will have missed my announcement.
5. If students are absent, they will need to get the work they missed. This will be kept on a table
beside the door, which will have notes or worksheets. The time students have to complete their
make-up work will follow the district policy.
6. Technology will be put away unless otherwise stated. When the bell rings, students will put
away their technology by placing it under their desk.
7. Classroom materials will be provided for students in the middle of their grouped desks in a
container. Students will be able to use these materials when they are needed, otherwise students
are to leave the container alone.
8. Homework will be collected after I have gone over the homework with the students. Students
will pass their homework forward and I will collect it.
Consequences will be in place when the classroom rules and procedure are not followed. These
consequences will be as followed:
1. Warning
I will give students a warning, so they can correct their behavior. A warning will also make
students aware that they are not following the classroom rules and procedures.
2. Student Conference
If the student does not correct the behavior, a student- teacher conference will take place.
Depending on the issue, students will be asked to talk after class or come in during lunch to
discuss their behavior.
3. Detention
This is the next step in my consequences because I have given students an opportunity to correct
behavior. This detention may be served during lunch or after school, depending on the district’s
policy.
4. Email or Phone Call Home
When the behavior has become a severe issue, I will send an email or call home. This is a way I
can notify the student’s parent or guardian of the behavior and discuss a solution for the
behavior.
5. Office Referral
If the behavior is severe and requires the attention of the principal, an office referral will be
made. This is will only be used in the extreme cases when behavior poses a threat to the learning
environment.
While consequences are important in any classroom management plan, a system of rewards
must also be in place. A reward system is a good way to encourage positive behavior in students.
When student’s exhibit good behavior I would award them points. Different kinds of behavior
would be given a specific amount of points. When students reached a set amount of points, they
would be able to pick a prize from my collection. The prizes would range from pencils to school
spirit shirts. These prizes would each have a specific number of points students would need to
have to get the prize.
Community of Learning: Selecting and Managing Cooperative Groups
I believe that group work is essential to the classroom because it gives students the
opportunity to learn from one another and hear different perspectives. It is critical that I establish
procedures and rules for cooperative groups. When using cooperative groups to complete
assignments, the students will be assigned to groups in different ways. These ways will depend
on the type of assignment that is being presented, how rigorous the assignment is, and the class
size. Groups will be selected by the teacher, the students will group themselves, or they will be
selected at random. The group selection process will be made on a case by case basis to ensure
that maximum learning is taking place.
Rules are critical to any classroom, especially when conducting group work. The rules and
procedures that I would put into place in my classroom would be to respect others and their
opinions, everyone must contribute to the group, and discussion must be on topic with the lesson.
I would also want each group member to assign a specific task to each member to help every
student have a role in the group. Some of these group roles include a group leader, a scribe, and a
presenter. The group leader would be responsible for facilitating the assignment and making sure
that it is complete. The scribe would record the groups discussion or work. The presenter would
be the student who shares the groups ideas with the rest of the class. Other rules that I would
include for group work would be for students to participate in the group and to stay with your
assigned group. It is easy for students to become distracted if there are not rules in place.
