Cube Homes in Rotterdam: Design & History

The Cubehomes in Rotterdam were designed by architect Piet Blom in 1982 and 1984. He tilted conventional housing cubes 45 degrees and placed them on hexagonal pillars, creating 38 small cubes and 2 larger cubes connected together. Known as "Blaakse bos" or "Blaak forest", the tilted cube structures resemble trees and form a forest-like collection. Each cube home has 3 levels - an entrance level, a living area level, and 2 bedrooms above - but approximately 25% of the 100 square meter area is unusable due to angled walls and ceilings. While an innovative design, the tilted cube shape results in lost interior space.

these are the cube homes in Helmond

1:History
The first cube homes aren`t build in Rotterdam, but in Helmond.
The architect named Piet Blom build the first Three in 1974 and a year later the
others were build they said is was an experiment ,to see if people realy want to
buy an house like that.

Those in Rotterdam were build in 1982 and 1984 at the Blaak

Piet Blom and his cube projects

In1972 Piet Blom a task from the community of Helmind to design a

`ontmoetinscentrum`Blom thinks about separation between culture and living
to eliminate and to make a design in which these 2 big things fuse together.
for inspirations he has to know the erea of Helmond.
The trees in nature erea `de Peel` do him think about the columns of the
Alhambra(it is an moskee).
The trees en columns of the moskee inspiredhem to the unuseal idee.
he designs a forest of treehouses (the cubes) around the ontmoetingscentrum
to see if it was workable he made 3 try houses .

The houses have a six cornered pilar and on that a turned cube.
The first etage he calls that straathuis, the second hemelhuis and the third
loofhut. In 1977 the theater ’t Speelhuis was made . Inclusief the tree houses
are combined with 37 cubes ,and in the biggest one there`s a theather.
the theater can house up to 700 people.

2:Information

Date of visiting:Saturday the 23rd of october

are under the angled cube houses, are a set of innovative houses built in
Rotterdam and Helmond in The Netherlands , designed by architect Piet Blom
in 1984. The houses in Rotterdam are located on Overblaak Street, and beside
the Blaak Subway Station. Blom tilted the cube of a conventional house 45
degrees, and rested it upon a hexagon-shaped pylon. There are 38 small cubes
and two so called 'super-cubes', all attached to each other.
the house are ment to be trees and the name of the buildingblock is het
Blaakse bos
because all those trees together forms a forest
As residents are disturbed so often by curious passers-by, one owner decided
to open a "show cube", which is furnished as a normal house, and is making a
living out of offering tours to visitors.

The houses contain three floors:

 ground floor entrance

 first floor with living room and open kitchen
 second floor with two bedrooms and bathroom
 top floor which is sometimes used as a small garden

The walls and windows are angled at 54.7 degrees. The total area of the
apartment is around 100 square meters, but around a quarter of the space is
unusable because of the walls that ceilings.

3:Shape

What I can say about the shape is that it really looks like an forestall those trees
The material that is used
they first made a wooden frame

The outside is coated with cement and triplex plates

The light in the house is also good because it has roof windows so you have
enough light from the sun

The colors of the house are yellow with grey/black rooftops in Rotterdam
The colors of the house brown/white with brown rooftops in Helmond
The space of the building is 100 Square feet but you can`t use al these space
because you have diagonal wall etc.

4:Contant

5:Function
The function of these buildings are houses and they are attracting for students
because they stand in the middle of the city.
The shape doesn`t says that it is an house because of the rare shape you
wouldn`t say it is an house.

6:My reaction
What was my expectation of my visiting.
I thought that there was more space to live on but because of all the diagonal
walls.

I like the building because of his shape but the shape also gives a lot of lost
space and that is an negative thing.
