CHAPTER 1
THE PROBLEM AND ITS SETTINGS
INTRODUCTION
Modern technology as we know, has advantages and disadvantages in the
education and academic performance of students. Technology in education plays an
important role to improve one’s educational knowledge and skills. This is essential
especially for those who require improvement in their knowledge to achieve a
successful life in the future. Technology is being demonstrated through the use of
computers, overhead projectors, laptops, and other preferable modern technology that
the lecturer uses. This has been helpful for educators themselves since they may
enhance their teaching skills and strategies more often in their class. Modern
technology became essential for both students and teachers but there are some cases
when it can be disadvantageous for them as well. There are advantages in modern
technology. For instance, it promotes independent learning for the students. They are
able learn on their own without any need for assistance from their parents nor teachers.
Internet has actually been their new assistant. It has quick access and is well-equipped
with technological skills and knowledge. Students can surf the internet to search for
lessons to study. Modern technology basically provides easier access to needed
information. Students have to carry their heavy books all the time in school and back
home every day. With modern technology, students need not to feel the burden of
carrying their books all the time anymore as information can still be accessed on
computers and other informative devices. Modern technology even promotes alternative
ways to educate students and keep them interested and motivated at the same time.
The internet provides tons of images, videos, graphics, etc. that could bring more
attention to students’ study habits. This is essential for the evolvement of students’
interest and perspective in studying.
In this study, we are determined to discover something new and unique that may
possibly affect the academic performances of students for us to be satisfied with our
study and to inform fellow researchers.
The rapid development of modern technology that has been observed for over
the past years have potential positive outcomes and concerns regarding the way
students are engaging with it and how it is making an impact on their learning and
academic performance. The world today is witnessing rapid acceleration in all areas of
science and knowledge, and a scientific explosion leading to more technological
developments and a new era known as the information age. The educational systems
must respond to these events and try to develop principles and standards for selecting
teaching methods to renew education and establish a modern educational environment
and an educational system that is compatible with these changes. In addition, the
educational system must be able to develop the learner abilities, knowledge and skills.
STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
The primary aim of this study is to determine the Effects of Modern Technology in
the Academic Performance of fifty (50) selected Grade – 12 STEM students at AMA
Fairview Campus.
Specifically answers the following questions:
1. What is the demographic profile of the respondents in terms of:
1.1 Age
1.2 Gender
1.3 Section
1.4 General Average
2. The modern technology that the respondents most preferred to enhance the
academic performance?
3. Is the use of modern technology efficient to the respondents and are they aware of its
benefits?
ASSUMPTION
This study postulated the following assumptions:
1. All information/data obtained are valid and reliable.
2. These are problems encountered by the students-respondents in using technology at
home and at school.
3. Academic performance of the students vary from one another.
4. The findings of the study may be used as basis to improve the use of technology.
5.The findings of the study focused on how modern technology affects the behavior and
attitudes of the students.

CONCEPTUAL PARADIGM
The study was conduct to present a deep understanding of the effects of modern
technology in academic performance of the students. This framework was used to guide
the work undertaken during the project. This investigation selects STEM students as
subjects of research. The researchers gathered data from the students includes the
informational resources, statement of the problem, solution, recommendation that offer
by them were in the input box. The second box is the process or methodology that will
be used by the researchers, this includes the questionnaire, survey, interview,
observation, focus and consistency, and this will be needed in order to achieve the
output. The last box is the output or the outcome that will explain how the modern
technology does affects the academic performance of students. The study will help the
students to gain knowledge on how to use modern technology in a proper way.
SCOPE AND DELIMITATION OF THE STUDY
The study identified the effects found on using modern technology and focused
on Grade – 12 STEM students. The study was delimited to Grade 12 students from the
STEM strand of AMA Fairview.
SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
The study about Effects of Modern Technology in the Academic Performance of
Grade – 12 Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) students of
AMA Fairview Campus will serve as a learning tool in their academic performance. The
result of the study was expected to benefit the following:
Students
This research study gave information to the students so they are aware of how to
utilize modern technology, give better impact on their academic performance, and use it
effectively, efficiently and appropriately. Students can become responsible in using
modern technology. They can take advantage of these which will be provided to them
on college. Modern technology can be used in schools often and include settings and
features that enhances accessibility. Increasing awareness of available accessibility
features and providing teacher training will help many students without requiring schools
to acquire new technology.
Teachers
The information helps teachers discover how the advantages and disadvantages
of modern technology gave impact to the academic performance of BSBA students.
They can use this technology to help their students’ learning capabilities. It can be
easier for teachers to choose the teaching strategies and specific tools for their
students’ learning needs and to use modern technology for enhancing their teaching
methods. Efficiency in making lessons and computing grades could benefit teachers in
their professional growth by being accessible to students. Easier access of students
through social communication, teachers’ training and support is critical. For teachers to
be able to help students personalize their academic performance, they must have the
necessary knowledge, skills, and resources.
School
If the school had useful and complete facilities in regards to modern technology,
many students will become more interested to enroll in the certain school.
Community
Sharing awareness to the community about how technology has given impact on
their residents can be helpful. The community is educated on how to create ways to
make modern technology useful for students. An example is providing computer shops
which must be taken responsibility by the owners. There should be a policy where these
shops are 100 meters away from school. It should only be opened during the time that
students are excused from school so that they can prioritize their education.
Parents
Understanding how modern technology impacts children is a must. Parents are
responsible in monitoring their children’s time and purpose for their use of modern
technology. Parents will be guided to mentor their children in their academic
performance and social facets.
Users
People who chose to use modern technology will better acknowledge how this
can impact their performance and activities, whether they chose to use this in a
beneficial way in supplementing their study habits or allow it to distract them. Students
will have the proper intelligence on how to improve their use of modern technology.
Future Researchers
This research study can be used as a comparative analysis and basis for future
studies regarding the impact of modern technology on the academic performance of the
students.
