Mathematics: A Perceived Threat to Grade 10 Students aiming for a STEM Strand
Population and Sampling
The study population consisted of grade ten (10) students aiming for Science
Technology Engineering and Mathematics or STEM who are currently enrolled in La Consolacion
College - Caloocan . Only ten (10) participants are sufficient and chosen since Phenomenology study
was conducted. This study focuses on the outcome of the interviewed on selected individual
respondent. The researchers will be using purposive sampling to the participant to meet the inclusion
and exclusion criteria set by the researchers for the participants of the study.
Inclusion Criteria
Subjects included in the sample were selected to meet specific criteria. Grade (10) students had to meet
the following criteria to be included in the sample.
They should:
5 Female and 5 Male grade ten (10) STEM strand students.
willing to participate in the research.
have interest in Science Technology Engineering Mathematics strand and can be able to assist
him/her to sign the written informed consent.
have the ability to answer verbally and maintain a 45 minutes to 1 hours of interview with the
researchers.
Have referred by an acquaintance of the researchers.
Exclusion Criteria
Those who are do no experience math anxiety.
Participants who do not wish to participate will not be included.

Instrumentation
The researchers utilized a Qualitative research and conducted by a semi-structured open interview
for the participants with a questionnaire for their perception in choosing Science Technology Engineering
and Mathematics strand. The interview contained 10 questions that has been formulated to know how
Mathematics as Perceived Threat in Choosing STEM Strand which is the main purpose of the study. The
researchers included the ethical consideration of the study regarding the confidentiality and safety of the
participants during the interview.
