Humans vs. Technology
If we look up the definition of technology in the dictionary, we will find a variety of ways
to describe the same concept: it is the practical application of knowledge used to change or
manipulate the human environment. To simplify these words: the creation of goods and services
to make our lives easier. This being said, if we go back in time, we can find that from the early
days, when man discovered fire and was conscious of its use, technology was born. From then
on, passing through the use of rock and wood to build weapons and all the way to the industrial
revolution, technology has been evolving, the same way man has, but at an increasingly fast rate.
For instance, twenty years ago, the thought of a technology capable of driving a car was
pure science fiction, but today it is a reality that each day threatens the positions of millions of
people whose work consists of providing such service. At the same time, the world is more
connected than it has ever been, yet families and friends seem to be growing apart because of the
influence of a variety of devices that day by day becomes a more essential part in the daily lives
of these people. As a result, some authors would classify today’s society as “over-connected”, or
“digitally obese”, given the amount of time we spend looking at a screen.
On the other hand, new developments have had a remarkable impact in several areas such
as medicine, construction, research, education, and many others, which have helped improve the
quality of lives of millions of people around the globe. New surgical procedures, biological
discoveries, online classes, it has all been possible because of the innovations we see on a daily
basis. However, the greater the technology, the bigger the threats to society can be, but those
represented by other humans, not machines as many would say.
We live in a world where being totally connected and having your life relying on a
machine can be used against you if the control were to fall in the wrong hands, for technology
isn’t good or bad per se, until we apply it. This being said, we should focus on establishing a
manual of digital ethics for the safe use of these resources, and doing a follow-up on
technological societies around the world to keep track of new discoveries and potential threats to
the general population. Education about the matter and development of safety procedures are a
more long lasting solution than banning and inflicting fear towards it.
