Solutions to school violence
It is undeniable that school violence is among the most significant problems which cause
massive trouble for not only the victims and their family’s life, the school reputation but
also the whole society. However, according to Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention (2017) “school violence can be prevented”. Their research also shows that
only by the prevention efforts of teachers, administrators, parents, community members,
and even students, can violence be reduced and the overall school environment be
improved. No one factor in isolation causes school violence, so stopping school violence
involves using multiple prevention strategies that address the many individual,
relationship, community, and societal factors (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
2017).
In terms of individual level strategy, according to Matjasko 2012, “one strategy for
addressing these individual risks is universal, school-based violence prevention
programs, which have been proven to reduce rates of aggression and violent behavior
among students”. These programs include emotional self-awareness, emotional control,
self-esteem, positive social skills, social problem-solving, conflict resolution, and
teamwork, according to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (2017). As reported
by Stop Bullying 2017, a United States federal government webpage, “it is important to
support all kids involved”, even the bystanders, “to make sure the bullying doesn’t
continue and effects can be minimized”.
In addition, “positive relationships between students and their peers, teachers, and
families can be critical assets in promoting youth’s well-being and preventing school
violence” (David-Ferdon 2012). Furthermore, as reported by Centers for Disease Control
and Prevention 2009, the social environment of schools include supporting effective
classroom management practices, promoting cooperative learning techniques, providing
educators with training and support to better meet the diverse needs of students,
providing opportunities to actively engage families, and creating open communication
and decision-making processes can influence the likelihood of violence. In addition to the
social environment of a school, it is suggested that the physical environment can
influence fear and safety (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention 2014), such as
increase natural surveillance.
3. Conclusion
Over a relatively short period of time, school violence has emerged and evolves into a
pressing issue in many parts of the world, growing in both popularity and seriousness. It
is crucial that people be adequately aware of its causes, impacts and solutions as soon as
possible. Only when people join hand to combat badness, can life become better.
