INTERECTUAL PROPERTY LAW
Intellectual property deals with issues regarding the security and enforcement of designs,
inventions, and artistic works. IP law covers areas such as:
Patents
Trademarks
Copyright laws
State secrets
WHY ARE IP LAWS NECESSARY
IP laws are necessary to prevent that from happening. Because they protect creations, these laws
and protections also serve to boost innovation by ensuring that those with profitable ideas are
properly rewarded. Intellectual property laws don’t just keep others from copying you, however.
They also help you create a product or asset you can safely sell or license to others.
There are four types of Intellectual Property:
1. Trademark: These are words, images, and sounds that identify a brand
E.g. “DELL” is trademark that identifies goods (computers and computer related
objects). E.g. “CITY BANK” is a trademark that relates to services (banking and
financial services).
2. Patents: Patents give an inventor exclusive rights to use, make and sell the invention and
can stop others from doing anything with that idea or invention
Examples: Electric lighting- patents held by Edison and Swan Plastic- patents held by
Baekeland Ballpoint pens- patents held by Biro Microprocessors- patents held by Intel.
Telephones-patents held by Bell CDS-patents held by Russell.
3. Copyrights: This form of protection covers original music, art, software, or video.
4. Trade Secrets: There are pieces of information such as a recipe, process, or technique
that gives a business an advantage over competitors.
