Civil Simplified is the brainchild of IIT Kanpur alumni formed with the intention of improving

Course Introduction

Survey Camp using Total Station Workshop

What is this workshop about?

Surveying or land surveying is the science of making all essential measurements to determine
the relative position of points or physical and cultural details. Experts in Surveying can become
licensed surveyors and members of various building professions. A Total Station is an electronic-
optical instrument used in modern surveying and construction.

In the Survey Camp using Total Station, the modern Total Station we use is a combination of an
electronic theodolite, an electronic distance meter (EDM) and software running on external

What is this workshop about?

Geographic Information System (GIS) technology has predominantly changed how our world is
analyzed and modeled. Be it small businesses, multinational companies, agriculture-based
companies, educational institutions, or maps guiding a lost individual- GIS finds application in
many areas. The rapid growth rate of data poses the huge challenge to its interpretation. GIS
provides an easy and more efficient way to interpret geospatial data – to create a topographic
map with elevation, angles and other features. This workshop exposes the participants to the
concepts and applications of GIS in use for multiple disciplines. Participants will learn to create,
edit, visualize, and analyze geospatial information and apply this learning to work on a vast
range of projects where GIS technology is used.

the right skills and choice of specialization! We analyzed some popular Civil Engineering
specializations to better understand the career scope for Civil Engineering graduates. Here

Construction Materials Engineering

The rapidly emerging construction industry needs Engineers with expertise in building
materials and technologies. Generally, students with knowledge in materials development
and maintenance are interested in this field. The industry prefers graduates with knowledge
on multiple construction materials with an ability to adopt new technologies. Trending
sectors include cement, iron & steel, timber, and heat-resistant materials.

Engineering Design

do you make the most out of your college experience this semester? Here are some success
mantras for a productive and enjoyable semester:

Define your goals

List out the things you will work on this semester to improve as an engineering student.
Doing this will help you subconsciously plan your activities towards success. Decide these
goals after doing a self-assessment of the previous semester performance.

Utilize online resources

You can always seek help and advice via platforms like quora.com and reddit.com which
have millions of active engineers from around the world. Utilize social media channels like
YouTube for your academic advantage.

Study smart, not hard

Use visual metaphors to understand engineering better. Relating a subject to real life is a
better way to remember concepts. While studying, maintain a separate sheet adding
mathematical formulas when you stumble upon them. This will be useful for a quick revision
before your semester examinations. Look up more such innovative ways to make your study
process simpler.

Teach to revise

Teaching your friends is an effective and interesting way to revise a subject. Speaking out
