Script: Coffee + TV

FADE IN:
EXT: STUDENT HOUSE – MORNING
To the untrained eye this is an ordinary house being moved into by three
unassuming young university students, we see suitcases being rolled
through the gate.
CROSS DISSOLVE TO:
EXT: FRONT DOOR – MORNING
The first of the three students knocks on the door.
FRANKIE, British criminology student, 18-19, nerdy but practical, knocks
rapidly on the door.
Behind him stands two others.
STEVE-O, British Performing arts student, 18-19, nerdy but shady,
looking around unsure.
The door opens
HARPER, British-Welsh former animation student, 18-19, gothic but
masculine, opens the door. She smiles up at the tall nerd.
FRANKIE
(Unsure, nervous)
Excuse me, I’m Franklin Nye, mates call me Frankie. Uh, I study
Criminology part-time; I also work at a local charity shop. This is the
right house, I, I mean, I mean student living, Right?
HARPER
Yes, who are the other two?
The closer of the two other students steps forwards, STEVE-O
STEVE-O
(very relaxed)
Hey there, my name is Steven. But most people just call me Steve-O.
I do (clicks his fingers) performing arts. And, this is, student house,
yeah.
HARPER ushers them into the kitchen.
HARPER
Hello, I’m Harper Wayne. I used to study Animation, but I didn’t like it
so I’m changing my course of study, until then. I am Your Guide to this
crazy place. Well, Me and … Tony.
A noise comes from upstairs, it sounds like someone punching through a
wall. The three now look scared and concerned. TONY, British former
Police studies student, 18-19, easily angered and very strong, storms
into the room in a rage and stops upon seeing HARPER, her mood softens
slightly. She looks up at the other students.
TONY
(annoyed)
Name’s Tony S. I got kicked out whist studying to be in the police. I
went out pretty much every night getting drunk. Dumb choice, I know.
(To Harper)
Who the hell are they?
TONY puts his hand on Harper’s shoulder, hugging her closer towards him.
HARPER
Well, Tony, (she points to each one in order) this is Frankie and Steve-
O, they’re new here.
As HARPER finishes her line we see close-ups of each of the three and we
hear their inner thoughts but we don’t see them talking.
FRANKIE
(Concerned)
These people are insane.
STEVE-O
(Relaxed, happy)
I’m gonna get totally wrecked this year.
STEVE-O nods as he thinks about what exactly he’ll get up to.
CROSS DISSOLVE TO:
INT: LIVING ROOM – DAY
TONY and FRANKIE are relaxed on the couch staring at the TV and drinking
something (depends on personal preference). TONY looks like she’s half
asleep and FRANKIE looks like he’s on his second or third cup of coffee.
There’s a loud crash from upstairs, TONY jolts awake and FRANKIE jumps
off the couch in surprise. We hear loud footsteps and HARPER crashes
into the back door before rushing into the living room and almost
falling over.
HARPER
(Incredibly energetic, talking incredibly fast)
Tony, Tony, Anthony, dude, I, We, Holy, Huh …
TONY
(Confused, butting in)
Harper, Harper buddy slow down.
HARPER continues rambling and so TONY butts in again but louder.
(Shouting)
Wayne!
Harper stops in her tracks and looks like a deer in the headlights her
pale face now a light pink.
HARPER
You never usually call me Wayne, T. But anyway, I found the piece of
paper with the number for that thing, y’know that thing.
TONY
(Confused)
What thing?
HARPER
Y’know, the pizza place we went to last year before I got my tattoo,
that thing.
TONY now nods in recognition and smirks.
TONY
(Cocky, confident)
Oh, that thing, yeah I know what you mean now.
FRANKIE butts in confused and slightly caught off guard by HARPER and
TONY’s conversation. We get Frankie’s point of view.
FRANKIE
(Confused)
What are you guys talking about?
TONY
(Confident)
Almost forgot you were here. Harper and I have a tradition for new
students in the house, a kind of welcoming ritual, nothing too heavy.
Just getting drunk, laughing and summoning a demon or two, the usual for
any good welcoming party.
HARPER
(Concerned)
Where is Steve-O, Tony?
TONY
(Confused)
Why are you asking me, who the hell knows what they’ve been doing since
they moved in Monday, wait or was it Tuesday they moved in (he mumbles
to himself incoherently)
HARPER
Tony, Tony, Big dumb idiot jock I call a roommate, what are you doing?
HARPER clicks her fingers a couple times in front of her face to no
avail and thus starts to walk to the kitchen before a loud crash and
loud music starts playing from the kitchen and STEVE-O stumbles in,
oblivious to the mess he’s making. TONY continues mumbling and trying to
work something out, FRANKIE jumps up again from the couch, looking like
he’s about to bolt out the door if anything else crashes into the room
and HARPER turns around swiftly, going towards her computer.
STEVE-O
(Ecstatic, delirious)
Woo! Oh my, shit just happened. What’s going on?
STEVE-O looks around and notices that both TONY and HARPER are oblivious
to his actions and thus starts smiling strangely at FRANKIE and walks
towards the couch.
STEVE-O
(Continued delirium)
Look pal I’m gonna be frank with you, Frankie, (he laughs a bit then
sighs) I’m a bit loopy right now, could you go get me a jack and coke,
without the coke.
FRANKIE
(Confused)
So, Just Jack Daniels?
STEVE-O
(Delirious)
Uhm yeah, that, thanks …
STEVE-O passes out on the couch facing the wall. FRANKIE gets up and
walks out to the kitchen where he sees OPAL on her phone to someone we
see her talking but due to us being in FRANKIE’s point of view he blocks
out the sound and goes to the alcohol collection behind the door.
FRANKIE feels like he’s being watched and he turns around swiftly.
FRANKIE
(Confused and concerned)
What do you want?
Because we’re in his point of view we can clearly see the room is empty.
We hear the jumble of thoughts going through FRANKIE’s mind.
FRANKIE
(In his mind)
Need to decipher what Tony and Harper are going to do to us. Need to get
Steve-O his Jack Daniels. Need to calm down. Happy Place. Need to go to
Happy Place.
HARPER sighs in defeat. The camera continues into the living room and
sees STEVE-O upside down on the couch with the word ‘Waste’ written on
his forehead in green pen and TONY with the Word ‘Jock’ written on her
forehead, TONY and STEVE-O wake up startled.
STEVE-O - a montage of what he does which includes reading scripts,
practicing lines and death scenes in particular, going through a wide
range of emotions, drinking, smoking and gazing longingly at his DC
females Pin up poster.
STEVE-O
I know what Frankie does.
As STEVE-O goes into detail about what FRANKIE does we get a montage of
what he does which includes reading about serial killers, reading
textbooks, drinking immense amounts of coffee and gazing at his Dr.Who
poster.
TONY
That’s all?
STEVE-O
Yep. What do you do big fella?
As TONY goes to answer the question we get a montage of what she does
which includes working out, drinking alcohol, more working out, reading
police reports and legal documents about the law, even more working out,
more drinking and attempting to seduce ladies, especially HARPER who
pays little to no attention.
STEVE-O
(Confused)
Why is ‘Jock’ written on your head?
TONY
(Reassuringly)
Its Harper’s way of saying how she feels, give her time and she’ll write
something on you. It’ll either be green or red.
STEVE-O
(Even more confused)
She has a system for writing on people? Why?
TONY
(Dreamily)
She’s actually quite harmless for a Goth.
STEVE-O
(Delusional, confused)
The TV looks weird from here dude, I’m upside down, why am I upside
down?
CROSS DISSOLVE TO:
EXT: DECKING – AFTERNOON
We see HARPER, TONY and FRANKIE sat on the sun loungers each nursing a
drink respective to their characters, STEVE-O is nowhere to be seen and
TONY keeps looking from HARPER up to her bedroom window before she
speaks.
TONY
(Confused)
So, Harper, Any plans …
HARPER
(Bluntly)
… Stop staring at the window.
TONY stops staring up at the window and changes her focus to the gate.
FRANKIE
(Confused)
Has anyone seen Steve-O recently, it’s been a week since we saw him
last.
HARPER and TONY
(In unison)
We know.
HARPER
This is the fifth time you’ve asked that set of questions Frankie.
HARPER starts to walk into the house. HARPER slams the door behind
herself. TONY’s mood sours slightly.
FRANKIE
(Curious)
What exactly is going on between you two?
TONY
(Bluntly)
Nothing, unfortunately.
FRANKIE
(Curious)
Why’s that?
TONY
(Sadly, almost desperate)
She’s the one girl I can’t get but the one girl I need.
At this point of conversation STEVE-O bursts through the now wide open
gate, his eyes wide and his lip bloody. FRANKIE jumps backwards, TONY
sighs deeply.
STEVE-O
(Ecstatic)
Yes, I know I’m bleeding, don’t ask but I have something that might work
for this situation
TONY
(Upset)
How is this gonna work exactly?
STEVE-O
(Ecstatic)
Just trust me.
CROSS DISSOLVE TO:
INT: HARPER’S ROOM – AFTERNOON
HARPER’s sat on her bed sulking, going over a sketch of TONY with ink
and coloured pencils. TONY knocks on her door, she rushes to hide the
drawing and goes to put makeup on to fix her appearance. TONY opens the
door.
TONY
(Unsure)
So, uhm, I have something to say. I’m not sure how this sounds to you
but hear me out. You. Me. Drinks. Tonight?
HARPER
(Confused)
Okay?
TONY
(Confident)
Okay.
TONY walks up to FRANKIE and STEVE-O.
FRANKIE
(Curious)
So, how did it go?
TONY
(Confident)
I think it went well.
STEVE-O
(Curious)
When’s it going down?
TONY
(Confident)
Later Today.
STEVE-O and FRANKIE
(Confident, curious, in unison)
Are you ready for it?
HARPER looks over at her computer, worried. TONY looks down at his
phone, unsure. Neither of them are ready and it’s painfully obvious.
STEVE-O and FRANKIE start telling TONY how to be confident and win over
the gothic girl.
STEVE-O
(Confident)
How hard can it be to get in her pants?
FRANKIE
(Disgusted)
Is that all you think of?
STEVE-O nods and goes back to boosting TONY’s confidence.
STEVE-O
(Confident)
Or you romance her and then rip her clothes off when the time is right.
FRANKIE
(Disgusted)
You disgust me.
