13 Coding Lesson Idea Template

This document provides details on a lesson plan that uses the coding program Scratch to help 6th grade students learn and reinforce vocabulary words from a story. Students will create a short video using Scratch to explain the definitions of three vocabulary words. The lesson allows students to be creative in how they present the definitions and aims to introduce them to computational thinking and coding. Completing the project may take two class periods and students can also work on it at home. The goal is to expose students to new technologies and broaden their horizons rather than teach coding skills.

Coding and Computational Thinking

Lesson Idea Name: Coding and vocab

Content Area: ELA
Grade Level(s): 6
Content Standard Addressed:
ELAGSE6RL4: Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including figurative and
connotative meanings; analyze the impact of a specific word choice on meaning and tone.

Selected Technology Tool:

Scratch

Bloom’s Taxonomy Level(s):
☐ Remembering ☐ Understanding ☐ Applying ☐ Analyzing ☐ Evaluating ☒ Creating

Levels of Technology Integration (LoTi Level):

☐ Level 1: Awareness ☐ Level 2: Exploration ☐ Level 3: Infusion ☒ Level 4: Integration

☐ Level 5: Expansion ☐ Level 6: Refinement

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

Students have the flexibility to create their vocab line in whichever way they want, and because this is an
intro to coding they are allowed to keep it simple. As long as I can see they’re trying and have the correct
definition they will succeed in this task.

Lesson idea implementation:

Students will take three vocabulary words from our current story and create a short video of an icon of their
choosing explaining the definitions of each of these words. It will take probably two class periods to complete
this assignment, and students are allowed to log onto their accounts at home to work and play with these
assignments as they please. Students will get feedback for their assignments through tips on how to improve
their coding process. They will not be graded on their ability to perform coding because this is a language arts
assignment, they will simply be graded on their understanding of the vocab and effort them out into trying.

Importance of technology:
The project could be completed without technology at all let alone coding tools. The importance of it is to
introduce students to new technology that they might not have the opportunity to try otherwise. It’s to
broaden students horizon of what they enjoy in and out of school.

Internet Safety and Student Privacy:

Possible issues could be the safety behind creating an account and using real names online. The stress of this
can be taken away as students are able to use nicknames to input their information.

Reflective Practice:
This is an introductory assignment to coding which gives students the opportunity to explore a technology
they usually would not have. This is not something I plan on directly using in my classroom often but would
not be opposed to a student turning in a freelance assignment through a technology like a coding tool
website.
