you may attain salvation.
Surah Al-Ĥaj 22:77
Universal Definition
The firm creed that one’s heart is fixed upon without any wavering or doubt. It excludes any
supposition, doubt or suspicion.
C. Pantheism – concept
Pantheism is a metaphysical and religious position. Broadly defined it is the view that (1)
“God is everything and everything is God…the world is either identical with God or in some
way a self-expression of his nature” (H.P.Owen). Similarly, it is the view that (2) everything
that exists constitutes a “unity” and this all-inclusive unity is in some sense divine
(A.MacIntyre). A slightly more specific definition is given by Owen who says (3)
“’Pantheism’…signifies the belief that every existing entity is, only one Being; and that all
other forms of reality are either modes (or appearances) of it or identical with it” (p. 65).
D. khawariij, qadarite, jabarites, and mutazilites (memorise page 49 and 50 of the
text, also the book on Qada and Qadr; reference on qadarites etc.)
• Khawarij
• Deeds are a component of Iman
• If a person commits a major sin, he loses Iman and becomes disbeliever
• Major – zinah, consuming alcohol, riba
• Punishment is permanent exit of Islam
• Khawarij comes from the word Kharj which means to exit
• Mu’tazilah
• Deeds are components of Iman
• However, one who commits major sin is not a disbeliever but will be in hell
forever
• Means you can still practice Islam (like a person’s actions are not accepted
for 40 days if consume alcohol, that doesn’t mean we have 40 days of
leave but still must perform deeds with the hope that Allah forgives)
• Hence one cannot escalate to Mukmin once they have performed major sin
• Al-Murji’ah
• The deeds of the heart are included but not the deeds of the body (I am a
Muslim in the heart)
• Deeds of the body are only fruits of faith
• Iman does not increase or decrease (prayers or other Amal does not make
Iman increase or decrease)
• Matrudiyah
• Deeds of the heart are not part of Iman (drinking with right hand, entering
toilet with left leg is not part of Iman)
• Only the belief in the heart
• Some even exclude the statement of the tongue
• Iman does not increase or decrease
• Jahmiyah
• Ma’rifah (knowing) – firaun also knew Allah, he in fact toook shahadah as
stated in quran Surah Yunus 10:90. Allah says firaun was aware of Allah in
another surah.
• They had 100 followers
• Only existed for a short period of time
• Asha’irah
• Iman is tasdeeq (affirmation)
• It excludes all deeds as part of its essential components
• Ashairah had 3 components in his life, first of which was al ilmul kalam
which is falsafa
• This exists till today
