Identify the setting: Small Group

Include materials:

 Ace bandages

 Syringes without needles

 Slings

 Latex gloves

 Stethoscope

 Band aids

 Small flashlights

 Tongue depressors

 Reflex hammer

 Blood pressure cuff

 Surgical masks, scrubs, lab coats


 Clipboards, paper, and pens

 Stuffed animals or dolls with arms and legs

 Mats, pillows, blankets

Explain the directions:

1. Explain to children that doctors are people who help you feel better when
you are sick.
2. They wear clothes like I am wearing and put on gloves and a mask to
protect you from germs.
3. They use many tools like these to find out how to help you.
4. The doctor may use this stethoscope to listen to your heart like this.
5. In a hospital, you may stay in a bed like this one.
6. Have you ever been to the hospital?
7. What was it like? Were you scared?
8. Allow children to use these materials in the dramatic play center and act
out what they would do if they were a doctor and have another child be
the patient
9. Have children switch roles

Explain potential for integrating or incorporating other content areas or domain

development. Don’t force it. Include only if it makes sense with the activity.

Extensions:

Read the book Curious George Goes to the Hospital during large group and talk

about what the hospital is like. Ask children if they have ever been to the

hospital before and have them share their experience.

Materials can be left in the dramatic play center for children to use during
center time.
