Warm Up Activity #1

Ball Runner
Duration 10 minutes
Equipment 1 ball per pair
Area Size Create a 10m x 10m grid using cones to comfortably fit all your students
Instructions  Variation of rats and rabbits

 On call player with ball runs to try line, partner chases attempting to
make the tag

 In pairs

 Facing opposite ways
 When whistle blows whoever has the ball runs to the cone and the other partner
must chase the person and try to tag them.

Warm Up Activity #2

STAGGERED PASSING DRILL


Duration 5 minutes
Equipment 1 ball per group of 4
Area Size Create a grid as below using cones to comfortably fit all your students
Instructions  Ball to be passed along line as students run up and around
markers
 On way back students form a staggered line
 Emphasis on running onto the ball

 Pass and then run to your cone

Activity #1

3 on 1 INITIATING THE TOUCH WITH UMPIRE


Duration 10mins
Equipment Groups of 5 (Teams)
1 ball per group
Area Size Straight line 20-25m long
Instructions  3 offensive players, 1 defensive player (rotate)
 3 offensive players start on end line of grid
 1 defensive player starts at 5m
 Offense players objective is to initiate the touch and beat
defender to the next 5 m line
 Defence attempts to tag player with ball and get back 5m
 OFFSIDE RULE – Umpire to enforce and get back the 5m to
direct defence
Variation and Pick n pop
progression Add in tap when defender caught offside
Teachable moment Decision making
Spacing
Organisation: Extend vertical grid with extra marker or run horizontally
Leave space between grids for next drill

NOTES:

 Groups of 4 with 1 defender, 2 attackers and 1 umpire


 2 on 1 defender
 Umpiring need to call out to defender to let them know their position “offside”,
“onside” or “get back 5 metres”
 Simple drill
 Defender moving back to thirds and attacker moving towards with the ball
 Dummy half following pick up ball and runs towards the defender

ROUND ROBIN:

1. Groups of 4 people x 5 teams


2. 4 people versing 4 people
3. 2 games at once with 1 team umpiring for 2 games (2 umpires per game)
4. Effectively enforce a 5 metre rule in a modified game situation.

3 on 2 PICK AND POP vs PICK N PASS


Duration 10mins
Equipment Groups of 5
1 ball per group
Area Size 20-25m line
Instructions  3 offensive players, 2 defensive player (rotate)
 3 offensive players start on end line of grid
 2 defensive player starts at 5m line of grid
 Offense players objective is to initiate the touch and beat
defender to the next 5 m line, scoring a try in 3 attempts
 Defence attempts to tag player with ball and get back 5m
 OFFSIDE RULE
Variation and Add in tap when defender caught offside
progression Add in second pass and extra rotation

Spacing
Organisation: Extend vertical grid with extra marker or run horizontally
Leave space between grids for next drill
