Manichean Invocation

This prayer invokes a feminine Holy Spirit according to a Manichaean text. It asks the Holy Spirit to come as the power of the Most High, a perfect compassion, a gift from the Most High, a compassionate mother, a communion of males, a revealer of hidden mysteries, the mother of seven houses to rest in the eighth house, and the elder of the five members of mind, thought, reflection, consideration and reason. It asks the Holy Spirit to cleanse the reins and hearts of young men and give them an added seal in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Ghost.

Prof. F.C. Burkitt in a note in the Oxford edition of the Acts of Thomas:

"Come, thou power of the Most High, and the compassion that is perfect.
"Come, gift of the Most High.
"Come, compassionate mother.
"Come, communion of the male.
"Come, she that revealeth the hidden mysteries.
"Come, mother of the seven houses, that thy rest may be in the eighth house.
"Come, elder of the five members, mind, thought, reflection, consideration, reason;
communicate with these young men.
"Come, holy spirit, and cleanse their reins and their heart, and give them the
added seal, in the name of the Father and Son and Holy Ghost."
