Bottle Rocket Flight Experiment Results

The document describes an experiment conducted by four students to test the flight time of a bottle rocket based on the amount of water added. They built a bottle rocket from a water bottle, cardboard, duct tape, water, a cork and a bike pump. They tested flight times and heights for rockets with 100mL, 150mL, 175mL and 200mL of water. Their results showed that increased water volume led to increased flight times and heights, with the 200mL rocket reaching the greatest height and longest flight time. They concluded the project was successful but could be improved by making the rocket more sturdy and planning further in advance.

Bottle Rocket

By: Shane, Kedrew, Maiya & Rebecca

Introduction-
For our project we decided to create a
bottle rocket. We built a rocket using a
water bottle, cardboard, duck tape,
water, a cork and a bike pump.

We wanted to test the flight time based

on how much water we had in the
bottle.
Principles
● Newton’s First Law- An object at rest remains at rest, and an object in motion
remains in motion at constant speed and in a straight line unless acted on by an
unbalanced force.
● Newton's second law- The acceleration of an object as produced by a net force is
directly proportional to the magnitude of the net force, in the same direction as
the net force, and inversely proportional to the mass of the object.
● Newton's third law- For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction.
Horizontal velocity
● Maximum height

# Independent Variable Flight Time (T) Height (ft)

1 100ml 18.87 sec 436.66 ft

2 150ml 21.35 sec 558.91 ft

3 175ml 22.05 sec 596.14 ft

4 200ml 23.98 sec 704.42 ft

Conclusions
In conclusion, this project was a success but it could’ve been improved. We were able
to create a rocket which was able to be launched into the air with a bike pump.

The biggest problem we faced was that we never had time to get together. Each one of
the group members have different schedules so trying to find time was hard for us.
Thankfully we all had one open day and were able to meet up.

If we could change something about this project it would be to reconstruct our bottle
and make it a bit sturdier. Another thing is plan ahead, so we would be able to get the
rocket done sooner. Doing it sooner would cause less stress on us.
