Dynamic Balancing of Rotating Machinery

Dynamic balancing is a process to balance rotating machinery by measuring vibration and adding or removing weights until vibration is minimized. Both static and dynamic balancing are important to reduce noise and extend machine life. Static balancing ensures the center of gravity is aligned with the axis of rotation, while dynamic balancing accounts for movement during rotation. An experiment demonstrated that consistent counterweights placed 180 degrees apart produced no imbalance, while random weights caused vibration, and larger radial imbalance increased vibrational forces. Proper balancing of rotating components is necessary for efficient and safe machine operation.

CONCLUSION

Dynamic balancing is a way of balancing machines by rotating parts quickly and

measuring the imbalance using electronic equipment. The imbalance measured can then be
corrected by adding or subtracting weight from the rotating parts until the vibration is reduced.
Basically, all machines have some form of residual vibration. Enormous vibration in rotating
machinery can cause high levels of noise and more importantly, significantly reduce the life of
components. So, the ideal thing to do would be to remove all causes of vibration and allow the
machine to run completely smooth. The process of balancing is the removal or addition of
weight to the device, so that this effective mass centre approaches the true axis. In addition
to dynamic balance, there is also static balance. When a part is statically balanced, the centre
of gravity is on the axis of the rotation. This means the part will stay stationary at a horizontal
axis, without the application of braking force. It also has no tendency to rotate due to the force
of the gravity.

The equipment includes a set of four rotating masses (balance blocks). The balance
blocks fix in any horizontal position and relative angle on the shaft. Each block contains a
different (and removable) circular insert, allowing us to create four blocks of different mass
and moment. Without the inserts, the blocks become four identical masses for simple balancing
tests. We fit an extension shaft and pulley (supplied) to the end of the balance shaft. Then we
add weights (supplied) to a cord wound round the pulley to measure accurately the moment of
each balance block. The test assembly includes a protractor at the end of the shaft and a linear
scale with slider under the shaft. These allow accurate measurement of balance block angles
and horizontal positions. An electric motor and belt turns the shaft to test for dynamic
balancing. The flexible mounts allow the assembly to vibrate, showing imbalance during
dynamic balancing tests. Students remove the belt to check for static balance (the shaft should
remain static at any angular position). A transparent safety dome covers the whole rotating
assembly. An interlock shuts off power to the motor when the dome is not fitted.

Once the heavy spot is located, it can be corrected by either adding mass to the rotor on
the opposite side as the heavy weight or removing weight from the heavy location. Methods of
adding weight include bolting or welding onto the rotor. Removing weighty from the rotor can
be done by drilling, grinding, milling etc. If the location of weight addition / removal is
unaccessible, the unbalance vector can be split such that the correction can be made via two
accessible additions / removals instead.

Lastly to ensure the most efficient and safest operation, a machine with rotating parts
must be statically and dynamically balanced. Vibrations are a result of an unbalanced machine
and can be the root to many mechanical failures. From the experiment, it was seen that
consistent weights placed 180° apart caused no imbalance to the rotor, where as if weights were
placed in a random order on the rotors, and imbalance was noticeable. It was seen that the larger
the radius of inconsistent weight distribution, the vibrational forces were greater. It was also
noted that the rotors with a balanced weight distribution had a lower relative velocity than the
rotors with unbalanced weight distributions distributed throughout the rotor.
