Cholinergic Agonists: (Cholinomimetic or Parasympathomimetic)

Cholinergic agonists can be either directly acting or indirectly acting through inhibition of acetylcholinesterase. Directly acting cholinergic agonists include choline esters and alkaloids that mimic the action of acetylcholine at nicotinic and muscarinic receptors. Indirectly acting cholinergic agonists are reversible or irreversible acetylcholinesterase inhibitors that prolong the action of endogenous acetylcholine, including commonly used drugs like physostigmine and donepezil as well as toxic organophosphates and carbamates.
