Planning and Design

This document describes two planning and design options for an experiment to determine the rate of hydrogen peroxide breakdown catalyzed by different substances. Option 1 involves using conical flasks, syringes, and a delivery tube to collect and measure the volume of oxygen gas produced over time from each catalyst added to hydrogen peroxide. Option 2 uses measuring cylinders to observe and record the distance traveled by bubbles over time for each catalyst and hydrogen peroxide mixture. Both options would plot the results on line graphs to determine the peak rate of hydrogen peroxide breakdown for each catalyst.

Planning and Design: Option 1

Apparatus/Materials:

4 Conical flasks

Timer/Stop watch

4 Syringes

Rubber stopper

Glass/Rubber Delivery Tube

Catalysts (Manganese (IV) oxide, Copper oxide, Liver extracts, Potato extracts)

Hydrogen peroxide

Measuring cylinder

Measuring scale

Method

1. Label each conical flask with the name of catalyst to be used.

2. Measure and place 25 ml of 3% Hydrogen peroxide in each conical flask.
3. Measure 1 g (solids) or 1 ml (liquids) of each catalyst.
4. Fit the delivery tube into the rubber stopper and attach a syringe to the delivery tube
5. In the first conical flask place Manganese (IV) oxide
6. Cover the conical flask with the rubber stopper and simultaneously start the timer.
7. Record the reading on the syringe every 5 seconds for a total of 30 seconds.
8. Complete steps 4 to 7 for the remaining catalysts.
9. Plot four (4) line graphs for each catalyst of Volume of Oxygen (reading on syringe) versus Time
using the readings recorded. Draw a line through each point.
10. The highest peak of each graph will be the rate at which the catalyst increases the breakdown of
the hydrogen peroxide.
Planning and Design: Option 2
Apparatus/Materials:

Timer/Stop watch

Catalysts (Manganese (IV) oxide, Copper oxide, Liver extracts, Potato extracts)

Hydrogen peroxide

Dishwashing liquid (Quix, Dawn etc.)

4 250 ml Measuring cylinders

1 100 ml measuring cylinder

Measuring scale

Method

1. Label each 250 ml measuring cylinder with the name of catalyst to be used.
2. Measure 1 g (solids) or 1 ml (liquids) of each catalyst and place them in the corresponding
measuring cylinder
3. Place 0.5 ml of the dishwashing liquid in each measuring cylinder containing the catalyst.
4. Measure 25 ml of 3% Hydrogen peroxide and place in the first measuring cylinder while starting
the timer simultaneously.
5. Record the distance travelled by the bubbles every 5 seconds for a total of 30 seconds.
6. Complete steps 4 and 5 for the remaining catalysts.
7. Plot four (4) line graphs for each catalyst of Volume of Oxygen (reading on syringe) versus Time
using the readings recorded. Draw a line through each point.
8. The highest peak of each graph will be the rate at which the catalyst increases the breakdown of
the hydrogen peroxide.
