the sound of the experience, I started planning a day trip. Curiosity got the better of me and I soon
found myself booking tickets for that evening with a couple of friends.
In the evening, I met my ghost-hunting group outside the towering, grey manor. We huddled together as
the guide revealed that this was in fact, one of the most haunted places in Britain. Unexplained
footsteps, voices and smells of lavender or even roast beef were regular occurrences. After hearing this, we
reluctantly stepped inside what we hoped, was an empty manor.
We were greeted by a grand staircase known to be haunted by two children usually heard rather than
seen. The guide reassured us that they meant no harm. In fact, the costumed female guides have
grown used to their aprons falling to the floor during a tour, as if untied by invisible hands.
We moved into the kitchen, famous for being haunted by the old housekeeper called Mattie baking bread.
She is said to be a friendly ghost and adored the children she used to look after. Her bedroom was on the
upper floor, the most haunted room of all. It was in this room that one of our group, a man who had
introduced himself as a policeman before the tour, began to cry. As I watched him leave the room, suddenly I
also felt a crushing sadness in me. It was unexplainable!
Working through the house I was surprised by my lack of fear. Even when I thought I heard a murmur of
voices, despite the fact we were the only group in the mansion, I wasn’t alarmed. The guide explained this
wasn’t an infrequent occurrence. Visitors would often hear conversations but on opening the door of a room,
the voices would travel to the next. I left Llancaiach Fawr with more intrigue than when I had arrived.
My night time visit certainly wouldn’t be the last.

A Although haunted, it was obvious that happy memories had also been made here.
B To my mind, it was a manor full of things untold and unexplained.
C After a series of fires, it had been restored to the peak of its glory in 1645.
D Like all children, they just liked to have some light-hearted fun and play jokes on people
every so often.
E However, as I browsed the website, something else caught my eye … a section called
‘‘ghost tour’’.
F Well, that’s until the guide told me that she had passed away under tragic circumstances
although nobody knows exactly what they were.
G Strange things had been experienced in nearly every room.
