Assume The Following Activities For A Project Along With Their Estimated Durations and Predecessors

This document provides information about a group project including: 1. The activities, estimated durations, and predecessors for the project. The critical path is identified as Path 2 (A+B+D+E+F+G) with a total duration of 13 days. 2. An explanation of critical path analysis, slack/float, expedite/crash, and fast tracking and their implications for the project. 3. An example of using the PERT analysis method to estimate an activity duration based on optimistic, pessimistic and most likely estimates, and the benefits and implications of using this tool.

1. Assume the following activities for a project along with their estimated durations and
predecessors.

Activity Estimated Duration in Days Predecessor

B 4 A

D 1 C,B
E 1 C,D
F 3 D,E

i. Describe how critical path analysis would be applied to this project, and calculate
the critical path.

 The critical path analysis would be applied to this project by find the longest
path that have the shortest time project that can be completed and have zero
slack (or float) in the project.

Possible Paths Paths Total

Path 1 A+B+D+F+G 12

2+4+1+3+2

Path 2 A+B+D+E+F+G 13

2+4+1+1+3+2
Path 3 A+C+D+F+G 11

2 + 3 +1 + 3 + 2

Path 4 A+C+D+E+F+G 12

2+3+1+1+3+2

Path 5 A+C+E+F+G 11

2+3+1+3+2

Thus, the critical path is Path 2 ( A + B + D + E + F + G ) with total of 13 days.

ii. Define the concepts: slack/float, expedite/crash, and fast tracking and explain what
their implications are for this project?

Slack/float is the amount of time on activity can be delayed that is take longer
than expected before it delays the project. The implication is it can influence
project manager’s decision.

Expedite/cash is a project manager can expedite the project by adding resources

to an activity on the critical path to shorten its duration. The implication is the
project manager may even be able to divert resources from certain activities.

The fast tracking is doing two or several activities that were originally planned to
be completed at the same time can shorten the critical path. The implication is
project schedule shorten.
2. Three team members are given the task of estimating activity durations. Mr.
Optimist estimates the activity to take 2 days to complete. Ms. Pessimist estimates the
activity to take 5 days. Mrs. Realist claims that the most likely estimate is 4 days.
What should their PERT analysis assign as an expected duration for the activity and
what are the benefits and implications of deploying this tool?

Activity estimate = 2+(4x4)+5

= 3.833 days

Benefits : The benefits of PERT are its enables the business managers to predict
time and cost of the project in advance and it suggest areas for increasing
efficiency and reducing cost.

Implications : The implication is when to create a proper PERT chart, a lot of

time and effort needs to be invested in creativity, developing and maintaining.
The input is need from lots of different people and it can be considered very
time-consuming.
