Tutorial 1

1. The document provides three problems related to finite element analysis (FEA). The first problem involves determining the potential energy and displacement of a steel rod subjected to a distributed load using the Rayleigh-Ritz method. The second problem involves calculating the nodal displacements, element forces, and reactions of a truss structure. The third problem compares element stresses when a 50kN force is applied at an angle to a two-bar truss supported by a spring.

EPT371 FEA TUTORIAL SEM02 2017-2018

13 APRIL 2018

1. A steel rod is attached to rigid walls at each end and is subjected to a distributed load
T(x) as shown.
(a) Write the expression for the potential energy, П.
(b) Determine the displacement u(x) using the Rayleigh-Ritz method.
Assume a displacement field u(x) = a0 + a1x + a2x2.

T(x) = 300 lb/in

T(x) = 10x Traction, T(x)

2. Determine the nodal displacements, the forces in each element, and the reactions.

3. A two-bar truss structure supported by a spring is shown below. Compare the

stresses in both elements if the 50 kN force is applied at node 1 at an angle θ.
Young’s modulus, E and cross-sectional area, A of the bars are 200 GPa and 300
