Array City Lesson Plan

This lesson plan outlines a 3rd grade math lesson on multiplication and arrays. Students will first review arrays through a slideshow activity. They will then work in pairs to create an "array city" on posters, with buildings representing arrays and multiplication equations. Students will be assessed based on including at least four buildings per poster with correct arrays and equations. The teacher reflects that the goal was for students to collaborate creatively while demonstrating their understanding of arrays and multiplication.

Lesson Plan Format:

Teacher: Brieanna Caillot Grade Level: 3rd

I. Content and Standards:

a. CC.2.2.3.A.1 Represent and solve problems involving multiplication
and division.
b. CC.2.2.3.A.3 Demonstrate multiplication and division fluency.
II. Prerequisites: Students should be able to fluently multiply numbers 0
through 10
III. Instructional Objective: After reviewing arrays, and making
connections about how we may see them in the real world, students
will be able to create an “array” city
IV. Instructional Procedures:
a. Before: in order to hook in your students, use a slide show that has
different arrays on it. As you are going through the slide show, ask
the students to figure out how many of each item there are. Lead
that discussion into talking about how they are arrays. Remember
to view the commutative property as well
b. During: in the last slide of the presentation, review what the
directions are in order to create an array city. The slide should also
have an example for what an array city would look like. Split the
students up into pairs in order to get them started. As students are
working, go around to each pair and talk with them about which
problems they would like to show.
c. After: If some students finish before others, have them work on a
worksheet until the rest of the class is done. When everyone is
done, allow students to walk around the room and see other
people’s projects
V. Materials and Equipment: computer, projector, black construction
paper for each pair, construction paper of other colors as well in order
for students to make buildings and their arrays, glue, scissors
VI. Assessment/Evaluation: They will be assessed on the following:
a. Having at least four buildings per poster (two each)
b. Multiplication equation at the bottom of the building
c. Displaying the correct array (using windows of the building)
VII. VII. Differentiation: If need be, work with M.A, K.T.C on how to cut out
a building. Observe them first and see if they are able to do it
independently
VIII. Technology: computer and projector.
IX. Self-Assessment: I think that this lesson went really well. My ultimate
goal was to get my class to collaborate with each other and be creative
as well. The overall purpose of this is to show me what you know. The
guidelines I gave were pretty simple, and I think that they were very
straightforward, but allowed for a great deal of flexibility. I noticed that I
hit several sections of blooms taxonomy by having them apply their
thinking to the real world, and the product came out amazing.
