Experiment No. - 01 AIM:-Apparatus: - Theory

Experiment No. -01 aimed to program Scilab software to find skin depth, loss tangent, and phase velocity. Skin depth is the depth electromagnetic waves pass through a conductor, measured in μm. Loss tangent is a measure of power loss in a dielectric compared to a conductor. Phase velocity is the rate at which the phase of a wave propagates through space. The experiment included examples and programs to simulate and verify the calculations. Experiment No. -02 aimed to find characteristic impedance, phase constant, and phase velocity using Scilab software. Characteristic impedance is the ratio of voltage and current amplitudes in a transmission line. Phase constant measures phase shift per length. The results were simulated and verified.

AIM :- Program to find skin depth, loss tangent and phase
velocity.

APPARATUS :- Scilab software and Computer System.

THEORY :-
 Skin Depth :-
The depth to which the electromagnetic waves pass
through the conductor is very small. It is measured in μm. Explanation:
The skin depth is the measure of the depth to which the amplitude of an EM
wave will reduce to 36.8% of its initial value. Thus it can be calculated if the
initial amplitude is known.

 Loss Tangent :-
The loss tangent is the measure of the loss of power
due to propagation in a dielectric, when compared to that in a conductor. Hence
it is also referred to as dissipation factor. Explanation: The angle of the loss
tangent δ is twice the intrinsic angle θn. .

 Phase Velocity :-
The phase velocity of a wave is the rate at which
the phase of the wave propagates in space. This is the velocity at which the
phase of any one frequency component of the wave travels. For such a
component, any given phase of the wave (for example, the crest) will appear
to travel at the phase velocity.

AIM :- Program to find the characteristic impendence,
the phase constant an the phase velocity.

APPARATUS :- Scilab Software and computer system.

THEORY :-
 Characteristic Impendence :-
The characteristic
impedance or surge impedance(usually written Z0) of a uniform
transmission line is the ratio of the amplitudes of voltage and
current of a single wave propagating along the line; that is, a wave
travelling in one direction in the absence of reflections in the other
direction.
 Phase Constant :-
The quantity beta is a measure of the
phase shift per length and is called the phase constant or wave
number. In terms of the wave velocity u and wavelength X.

 Phase Velocity :-
The phase velocity of a wave is the
rate at which the phase of the wave propagates in space. This is
the velocity at which the phase of any one frequency component
of the wave travels. For such a component, any given phase of
the wave (for example, the crest) will appear to travel at the phase
velocity.
