Periodic Table of Scaling Compounds: Caso Sio

This chart provides information on common scaling compounds that can form in water systems based on the solubility of their constituent ions. It lists the scaling compounds along with the concentrations of ions that indicate scaling potential. For example, if the calcium and sulfate ion concentrations exceed 751 mg/L and 1799 mg/L, respectively, then there is potential for calcium sulfate (CaSO4) scaling. An example is provided showing that reverse osmosis brine water has potential for CaSO4 and aluminum hydroxide (Al(OH)3) scaling based on the ion concentrations listed. The chart is intended to help users identify scaling risks and take appropriate actions.

Tips
Concentrations of the individual ions
• These values are based on solubility at 20ºC–no ionic in mg/L at their solubility limits. If Ca2+
effects and no antiscalants present > 751 mg/L and SO42- > 1799 mg/L
in your water, then there is CaSO4
• Well-designed antiscalants can increase solubility of
scaling potential.
