Black LGBTQ+ History Month Project

This document outlines a Black History Month extra credit assignment asking students to research and create a short biography and journal entries from the perspective of a notable Black LGBTQ+ figure. Students will be assigned one of 20 people to research, including activists, writers, and politicians. They are asked to include details about the person's life and accomplishments in their biography, and write two journal entries reflecting important moments from their perspective. The overall goal is to highlight and honor Black LGBTQ+ voices that are often omitted from discussions of Black history.

Black History Month Extra Credit assignment: Black LGBTQ+ People

Black History Month is a time to celebrate the ways in which Black Americans (who have historically
been erased from the dominant narrative of our country) have enhanced and empowered themselves and their
people. However, even within that framework of promoting marginalized voices, there are huge swaths of Black
Americans who are sadly missing from the picture. Black LGBTQ+ people suffer an additional level of
oppression due to their identities, and BHM lacks the stories and voices of the Black LGBTQ+ community.
Your assignment is to do a short, biographical project on a Black LGBTQ+ person and add their names
and accomplishments to your knowledge of Black History! You will be assigned a person, and your task is to
complete the following:
 Create a short biography that includes:
o Name of person
o Birthplace and date of person
o Why the person is famous
o Three interesting facts about the person
o A picture (printed or illustrated) of the person
 A journal that includes:
o At least two journal entries based on important moments from your figure's life.
o Should be written from THEIR perspective; write as if you are the person you are researching.
