Exercise on using transition words in an essay

The following ideas describe how football can connect people.

1. Using the bullet points below as a guide, use transition words to link the points.
2. To start, identify the main ideas/points and work out how they follow in a sequence.
3. Rewrite the points so that they form one paragraph. Use linking words or phrases to help the
paragraph ‘flow’ smoothly from sentence to sentence, joining points and ideas together and
moving the piece of writing along.

 Football can link people across the world who enjoy the game or even support the same
team, such as Manchester United.

 How? By visible symbols such as hats, scarves and team colours, all of which may be
worn.

 How is this shown on a larger scale? – Football songs and flags express a visible sense
of national belonging.

 What else illustrates this? The atmosphere of the game encourages the emotional
support of one’s own team.

But there is another point of view – it is also easy to spot supporters of the opposing team,
creating a sense of ‘us and them’ which may lead to antagonism
