CHAPTER 2: PRACTICUM BACKGROUND
2.1 JOB DESCRIPTION AND TASK ASSIGNED
Key in data in weighting
2.2 NEW EXPERIENCES AND KNOWLEDGE, GAINED DURING THE
PRACTICUM
I have many experiences during my practicum period here. I have many experience and gain
knowledge while working at YTY Industry.
Production
There are 6 block for production glove (block A, B, D, F, G and H). I have visit production
block D and observe how the glove made. This is my first time seeing how the operation for
making glove.
Compounding Area
Compounding is storage area after pumping latex and other chemical from container and
tanker. Factory using cylinder shape for storage. To see the level balance latex in storage we
need to climb up. One block consists of chemical tank (5 unit), coagulant tank (7 unit),
mixing tank (22 unit), PoH tank (3 unit) and latex tank (6unit).
Finish goods store
Finish goods store is for loading finish goods into container. All the carton are put on pallets
and wrapping before load into container. Packing is different based on customer request.
After weighting the container weight, container will direct go to Penang port to export. Know
which country factory exports the glove (container destination). Already know seal for
container and seal number is important.
Packaging store
See and experience put sticker on carton. Study the labelling for boxes and carton.
Important label of expired date, manufacturing date, lot number, size of glove and glove
detail (powder free, single use). All the artwork and design of boxes/carton is based on
customer request. If the glove request from poor country they only request to use plastic for
packaging.
Raw material
Know most of the chemical using for making glove. Know what type of packing of chemical
(metal drum,/plastic drum,/ bags/ tote tanks with pallets/ pallet mesh)
Most of the chemical hazard and need to handle careful. Each production block not use same
chemical. For example only production A and B use Alkaline FC 1100kg.

2.3 ISSUES OR PROBLEMS FACED DURING THE PRACTICUM
For the first week- i need and learn to adapt new environment since this is my first
experience working at office. The first day, is going well. i have been introduce to other staff
and meet my supervisor. The first week being stressful for me to adapt and get along with the
colleague. First just observe what my team doing and trying to do the job.
It difficult 1br me to understand certain work and need for detail explanation. The
problem occurs when the other staffs is expecting that i will know everything. But for me this
is new thing that i need to learn first. I need some time to fully understand the work. When i
keep repeating asking question when i not understand. They underestimate on me. This kind
of situation make me feel upset and give up to continue working at this factory.
The next problem is lack of rest time. Since this is private company. Worker need to
work Monday to Saturday working on Saturday is quite burden and only, one day rest time
for 1 week. I will accept if its only takes half day on Saturday but the working hour on
Saturday from 8.00 am until 5.00 pm. Besides that, it was working day on the most public
holiday. Sometimes i need to come on Sunday for working.
2.4 SUGGESTIONS FOR IMPROVEMENT (BASED ON THE ISSUES OR
PROBLEMS)
Company should provide better training for practicum student. Because i am the first
practicum student had been placed at store department the job description is not being
prepared. Compare to other practicum student that placed R&D department they have their
own project to be done. Company should provide
CHAPTER 3: COMPANY ANALYSIS
3.1 SWOT ANALYSIS
Strength
The growth in global demand for rubber gloves is expected to be maintained at 8% to
10% in 2017, says the Malaysian Rubber Glove Manufacturers Association (Margma). The
total export revenue of rubber gloves for 2017 to be at RMl5.2bil, while the projected total
exports revenue for 2016 to be at RM14.3bil. January-September 2016 statistics indicated
that the total export revenue for rubber gloves would reach RMl3.8bi1. The lower projection
was due to shortage of foreign workers to run production lines since February 2016 and
shutdowns due to water shortage in the past few months. It was necessary to cut costs all
round to stave off competitions from abroad. The 1.3% decreases in natural gas tariff a
welcome relief for rubber glove manufacturers. Both the increases had brought the Malaysian
natural gas price at world market level.
Investing in this can spur the industry further as the industry becomes more globalised
and competition with other countries intensifies. Rubber gloves sector has strong prospects,
and the Government will continue support to promote and increase exports of rubber gloves.
Over the last five years, exports of rubber products increased at a compound growth rate
The rubber glove industry has been showing a continuous chart of impressive growth
for the past 20 years despite recent challenges. YTY, Top Glove, Supermax, Latexi partners,
Kossan, Hartalega, Smart Glove, Excelkos, Tiong Tat, Synthomer, Aquaspersions, Brightway
and chempro Technology are key sponsors for the event.
Weaknesess
Raw material prices and currency fluctuations may hamper the growth of this market in the
coming years. Natural rubber latex (NR) price had remained at high levels. Nitrile butadiene
rubber (NBR) price had risen to US$1.65 per kilogramme in April 2011 due to rubber
consumers' unwarranted switch from NR to NBR.
0pportunities
The global industrial gloves market held an opportunity worth US$5.13 bn in 2015. The
market is expected to expand at a CAGR of 9.6% over the period between 2016 and 2024,
and rise to a valuation of US$11.01 bn by 2024. The segment of disposable gloves accounted
for over 85% share in the global market in 2016 and is expected to remain the dominant
product variety over the forecasting horizon as well. Applications across the pharmaceutical
industry helped the market gain the largest share of revenues, an estimated 25.5% in 2015.
Threats
High costs of products from international vendors mostly fail to appeal cost-conscious
industries, especially located in emerging economies. The threat of being replaced by locally
manufactured, cheaper varieties of industrial gloves across the highly lucrative developing
economies is a big loss for international vendors.
3.2 TOWS MATRIX
After performing the SWOT analysis, we will proceed with the TOWS Matrix which helps
YTY Industry Sdn. Bhd. to identify the strategic directions and methods to capitalize the
strengths and opportunities and at the same time to overcome weaknesses and threats.

3.3 SUITABLE STRATEGIES FOR THE COMPANY
The introduction of new glove designs with better grip and convenience are likely to offer
better growth prospects in future. The need of efficient gloves with better grip and
convenience are the prime reasons attributing to consistent product launches. Product
innovation and attempts at reducing the cost of products while maintaining the promise of
utmost quality. Acquisitions are also increasingly sought as a way of expanding product
portfolios and gaining the trust of an established consumer base.
3.4 MAIN PROBLEM OR CHALLENGES FACED BY THE COMPANY
1. Workers strike
I have been experienced when the workers strike. Foreign workers strike because of one local
worker take advantage against few foreign workers. It involves of steal and blackmail foreign
worker. Foreign worker have report the problem to human resource department but they not
taking any action and solution. When the same problem keep repeating foreign worker felt
unsatisfied and fight with the local worker. At the end all of them agreed to strike. They
strike for 2 days. Most of the worker here is from foreign country which is Nepal,
Bangladesh, Vietnam and Myanmar. When workers strike company production being
effected. Only 1 block running for production. All local workers have been gathered in
block/production A. Other than production, compounding area also having problem. No
forklift driver for unloading chemical and boxes carton. When this happen, factory
production not smooth and delay.
2. Lack of training
As we know, there are certain ways to handle raw material (chemical). Most of the chemical
ordered here is dangerous. It’s important for worker that handling with chemical to take
precaution step to avoid any injured and accident at work place. Everyone was worried when
chlorine gas leakage during pumping from tanker. The atmosphere was been poison and
nearby worker be affected. Everyone is looking for face mask and nearby worker wearing....
Everything was control and only few workers have been sent to hospital for treatment. Some
worker takes leave for 2 weeks to fully recovery. If the same accident still happen it will
cause badly injured and died. The atmosphere also being polluted.
3. Lack of local worker
To save the cost, most factories more prefer to hire foreign worker. The reason is because
Employers hire foreigners because they are better qualified and work harder compare than
local worker. Recruiting foreigners allows companies to become more efficient and expand
their businesses. Lowering labour cost becomes a very real issue and having foreigners
become almost a must-have agenda on every employer’s to-do list. If not, the business may
just sink. Foreign workers are inexpensive, hard-working and will not resist to dirty,
dangerous and difficult jobs which locals instantly shun. To the employers, Malaysians will
only take jobs in a comfortable working environment, with no exposure to harsh elements,
stench, dust or overtime. As a result, the local manufacturing industries have been invariably
anchored by foreigners.
4. Currency fluctuations.
Factors restraining the market growth are unstable. Raw material prices and the use of
robotics in manufacturing are very important. Raw material prices and currency fluctuations
may hamper the growth of this market in the coming years.
5. Lack of technology
All of production block here are using technology to produce glove. Even for stripping glove
they use wind power in order to make the finish glove taken out form the former. But, based
on what i have seen the process of prepare boxes and carton for labelling most of the process
are using worker for stamping and put on sticker. One boxes need to stamp for 3 time for lot
number, expired date and manufacturing date. This requires time consuming and this process
will make packing process delay. Factory already have inject machine but only for horizontal
way. There not available for parallel way. This is depending on customer artwork/design for
boxes and carton.
3.5 HOW ORGANIZATION MANAGED TO OVERCOME THE CHALLENGES
1. HR department should take action
HR department should more alert and need to consider about worker welfare. Like other
company they more prefer to maintain the company's image and not involve other parties.
Steal and blackmail is considered of police case and the incident happen outside factory. HR
department should report the case to the police and let the police settle the case. Taking this
action will satisfied both side.
2. New worker need to train and
During the chlorine gas leakage safety department have investigate for the main cause. The
main problem because of the worker that installs the pump is not installing the pumping part
property. The new worker not has enough experiences to handle chlorine gas. So, to
overcome this problem new worker should be train and under control of other worker that
have experience. Worker need to know that wrong step can cause big problem to factory.
3. Limited the foreign worker quota of the company's total workforce.
The government should slow down the intake of foreign workers in the near future to appease
a furious local population. Many are still jobless or under-employed. Company should have
certain quota for foreign worker and local worker. Government should to better control the
number of foreign workers in the country, the immigration department take action against
employers hiring unregistered foreign workers under the Immigration Act 1959. Under the
measure, employers found hiring or sheltering overstayers or holders of counterfeit visas and
passports will have their bank accounts and assets seized or frozen.
4. Stable finance
Factory should have stable finance to avoid any problem occur in future. Factory must know
and predict what will happen in future. By this way
5. Use more technology
In order to save cost and save time, factory need to consider using more technology. Not only
on production but also in other process. By this way, factory operation will smooth, more
productive and cost effectively
CHAPTER 4: CASE STUDY
4.1 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
In today’s world, business has become more and more competitive. All industries and
organization have to perform well in order to survive and be profitable. As well as the rubber
gloves manufacturing industry, the organization studied in this paper itself has to maintain the
quality of its products so as to be able to delight customers and thus effectively compete in
the market.
In general, one of the most vital concerns for the rubber gloves manufacturing industry
is the reduction of common quality defects such as holes and stain in gloves. From this point,
not only does an abortionist waste its resources and time to re-manufacture the products, but
it also contributes to the loss of customers’ satisfaction and trust. As a result, this has driven a
particular gloves manufacturing organization to improve the quality of its products in order to
create a competitive strategic advantage for its business and introduce itself to become a
global organization for further prospects. This paper investigates quality issues at YTY
Industry Sdn. Bhd. rubber gloves manufacturing company and provides a solution to
reduce/eliminate the most common defects.
4.2 PROBLEM STATEMENT
Because of the increasing number of pallets of second grade glove and reject glove, i
decide to investigate the problem. Since the second grade and reject store has limited space,
the excessive bag of second grade and reject glove had been placed outside store and it cause
the outside store area not comfortable and untidy. This situation also make difficult to
container and lorry pass the way. The main problem is, why glove being rejected and
recommendation to reduce the number of second grade and reject glove. Most of glove being
rejected because of the defect and damage on glove at manufacturing process.
4.3 PURPOSE OF THE STUDY
The purpose of the study is to investigate and identify what type of damage and defect
on second grade and reject glove and how to reducing the damage and defect glove. By this
way we can reduce the number of reject glove and to avoid more losses in the future. Besides
that the process of manufacturing of glove will more efficient.
4.4 METHODOLOGY
For the case study I have decide to focus on production block A. In order to get the
information, I have visited the Quality Assurance department. The quality control process is
performed by random sampling after all products have been finished. The products are
inspected by several methods. The first method is called blow test inspection. In this method,
air blowers are used to investigate whether the air is coming out from the gloves by looking
for pin holes which might appear on the glove’s surface, if so, these gloves are rejected. In
this type of inspection, the air stays in the gloves for approximately one hour.
The second quality control method to which gloves are subjected is water leak test.
This method is fundamentally similar to blow test inspection but in this case water is poured
inside the gloves instead of the air. The third quality control method consists of a visual test
inspection to check for stain marks on the gloves and/or misshaped gloves. Defective gloves
are rejected. Lastly, size, thickness and aesthetic appeal are also inspected to ensure that the
form of the gloves is in accordance with specifications.
