Steel Design Review Handout

This document provides example problems for a steel design review session. Problem 1 involves calculating properties of a beam cross section, including mass, radii of gyration, section modulus, and plastic section modulus. Problem 2 involves calculating bending and shear capacities for a W18x60 beam under Allowable Stress Design (ASD) and Load and Resistance Factor Design (LRFD). Problem 3 involves calculating interaction values under ASD and LRFD for a braced W12x96 beam-column subjected to axial and bending loads.

carries a maximum moment of 240
kNm under positive bending. Using
A36 steel, Determine the following:

An W18x60 steel with material specification of A992 was used to carry

the loads as indicated in the figure shown. Calculate for the following:

b. Radius of gyration along the stronger axis b. Flexural Capacity of the beam under old ASD
c. Radius of gyration along the weaker axis c. Shear Capacity of the beam under old ASD
d. Effective radius of gyration in accordance to old ASD d. Coefficient of bending under LRFD
e. Sectional Modulus of the stronger axis e. Flexural Capacity of the beam under LRFD
f. Sectional Modulus of the weaker axis f. Shear Capacity of the beam under LRFD
g. Effective radius of gyration in accordance to LRFD
h. Plastic Sectional Modulus of the stronger axis Prob. 3
